Thanks for all the info on the transmission. Should I post my question about the 2.7 swap in a different post?

These auto transmissions will go for a LONG time if maintained normally.

The only addition is installing an auxiliary tranny cooler. Over heating is a sure way to kill one. The Tru-Cool 4544 has a bypass feature that keeps it from over cooling the fluid.

That's where my money was spent.

ATF has a lot of cleaning agents in it. If your trans fluid has lots of miles on it there is a possibility that a "flush" could loosen all of the particulates that have clung to the various places and cause the valves and selinoids to stick... a gradual fluid change is what I reccommend and like in a prior post taking the trans out put line off the radiator and letting the trans pump it out a quart or 2 at a time is relativly easy way to do it. If you take the wrong line off and let the trans pull air there is a small chance that you could do damage to the oil pump in the trans by running it dry.

So, the owner's manual says "Dexron III", so I assume it's ok with that in lieu of the actual Toyota fluid...

Do you need to plug off the return line so it doesn't suck in air?

just dont let it run dry... a 3 second run and look and see how much comes out, top off, repeat. If you want you could put the return hose in a large container with trans fluid and monitor it but that is just one more thing to do. The trans pump pulls from the trans pan fluid and it holds quite a bit.

Since I'm having to put an engine in this truck, can I take the torque converter off and drain it then and just drain the pan also? Can I flush the converter with anything also while is off? Something that would clean it out and the pan also when I take it off? Thanks.

yes you can. if you have not done anything like this before use a little caution on reinstallation of the torque convertor. I have no way of knowing your mechanical abilities or knowledge... no insult intended. I would put a straight edge, a piece of wood, something you can measure from to see just how far the torque convertor sits on the front of the trans this is important because on some models the torque convertor can be installed but not all the way and the pump wont engage the convertor... the eingine will be a real pain to try to install and if you do manage to get it seated you might break the pump internally or not engage it at all which will destroy the trans post haste... I forget how many "notches" you feel when installing the torque convertor 2 or 3, it has been a while, I just measure to be sure.
You are gonna have your hands full on inital start up... starting it and running her for 4 or 5 seconds, shutting her down then adding trans fluid, repeat. You dont want to run the trans dry.

I've had a few converters out but its been years, I appreciate your advice on measuring first. I haven't drained them before though, can I pour fluid back into it before installing? Can I clean it out(flush it) with maybe some gas or kerosene to clean?
    Thanks for your input.

no on the gas or kerosene but yes to dumping the convertor and pouring in new fluid from the bottle right into the convertor. the issue is how much to pour in and not make a mess when you rotate it to install if you over fill.
