Transmission noise???

I have a 2004 Tacoma 3.4l 333k miles there is a little whine when put in gear but nothing too bothering. I noticed after long drives it would clunk from the front end in the engine Bay Area when I’m at a stop light. Lately when driving the clunking has casually started to become an annoying ticking/clunking noise. I ruled out the engine because it wouldn’t make that noise in park or neutral. Drives fine and normal cannot figure out the issue. Also what is the model of the trans?? A340? (4 speed auto)

 

You info says your truck is a Prerunner. If so (not a 4x4) the auto trans an A340E. On a 4x4 the trans is an A340F.

So a whine only when under load (in gear) and no whine when in neutral or park?

Yes the whine is only under load. Can hear it along with accelerating.

UPDATE: I can hear a little whine when in park or neutral not as bad as I put it in gear

 

Diagnosing noises via the internet can be challenging enough, but add to that the source of the noise you hear in the drivers seat is very difficult to locate. I guess what I am saying is, that whine source may not be what you think it is so you really need to be sure of the source before you can begin to try to solve it.

I was attracted to your thread title because I did have a trans fluid pump whine which was very difficult to diagnose.

it doesn’t do it as much cold but more noticeable when warmed up

I’m thinking about just buying a junkyard or should I rebuild? If rebuild what kits are out there or should I just let my local transmission shop figure it out. I really love this truck and I want it to last forever.

 

Woah, definitely a lot different sounding from mine. Doesn't sound like a trans fluid pump being starved for fluid.
