Coming home today after a 30km (20mile) drive that I do almost every day of the week... the only differences were that (1) about 100' from my drive way I pulled over to let someone pass as I swing out and back in... after he passed drive tires caught some slush/snow/ice on the shoulder and spun for a few seconds (maybe 15 max); and (2) while backing up the driveway (25', again something I do almost every day), caught a bit more slippery stuff and slipped a bit; again maybe 10-15 seconds. Got into my parking spot and the truck shut down and there was a "Transmission overtemp" alarm on the info display... WTF? Granted it's a Sport and not an OR / Pro, but I should hope that I could spin for more than 15-20 seconds without sending the transmission into alarm..... anyone have any insight on this (2018 DBL Cab, AT, 4WD, V6)

Anyone? Thoughts? Seen it before? Insight in to possible cause?

What was the RPM, it spinning at? 15 to 20 seconds of spinning wheels at high RPM is a lot longer than you think. It is also a warning, comes on before over heat occurs. To prevent damage.

To add to this a Sport, OR, and Pro all have same auto transmission wouldn't make a difference. Also if you were spinning and heating trans fluid up and shut truck down right after, you didn't give it time to cool down, by flowing thru trans cooler.

15-20 seconds of spinning is a really long time.

Going backwards pushes no cool air over the radiator. This happens to Tundras too.

"Spun" might have been a poor choice of words; I never completely broke traction, but the rear wheels were going a bit faster; maybe 2000 for about 10 seconds the first time and a bit less the second. My total 'backing up' distance including lining up on the road and the 25' of the driveway was less than 40'and total time in reverse was under a minute. At NO time did I mash the pedal, and at no time were the revs unreasonably high. I'm willing to put the overtemp alarm down to an anomaly, but the fact that it shut the engine down? That's downright dangerous.

See if you can make it happen on purpose.

Wonder if your transmission cooler is blocked. Take a quick peek.

Trans cooler appears fine; nothing blocking it, and no issues today, 'though the snow has melted enough that I was unable to accurately recreate the scenario.

I gone 200 to 300 metres (1000ft) in a low traction scenario, with one or more wheels spinning. No overtemp. I’m thinking some ice or snow yanked a sensor wire out.

I had this happen on an icy trail. I was slowly creeping in 4 low, not spinning much at all. Surprised me and I restarted and continued the rest of the day with no issues. Not sure why it happened and haven’t seen it since.
