Bless your heart for posting it, but I honestly can't fathom how you Auto Trans boys muss this one up.
I mean, is it the engine? Or not. Lol.

Don't feel bad OP, when I was a greenhorn still in tech school i worked at a local Firestone in the afternoons and weekends. A 2000 Subaru Forester came in for LOF, I drained the center differential thinking it was the oil pan, overfilled the oil pan by 4.5 qts and sent it down the road

That one came back on the hook

This thread begins as nightmare sauce. Bloody hilarious.
Like trying to work on the truck while coming down from a bender, sobering up hard right after you really screw up. Thanks for sharing.

I'm a well-seasoned tinkerer, been building stuff for over 30yrs. When I first crawled under my Tacoma I almost did the same thing. You're lying on your back,a bit disoriented. The trans pan is HUGE,while the oil pan is a tiny little thing. I didn't put a wrench on the drain plug, but I can see how people do this by mistake. Lesson learned sir.

It's ok OP, mistakes happen especially how weird the tacoma oil pan design is. First time I changed my oil, I initially put a wrench to the trans bolt but didn't turn it. I noticed the oil pan bolt last minute and googled to confirm. Didn't take long for me to put a fumoto valve on the oil pan. That valve makes oil changes on all my family vehicles a breeze. Prevents stripped bolts, crushed washers or searching for socket sizes..

exactly this. Put a fumoto valve on and you never have to think again when changing your oil. I’m going on 12 years now with my fumoto valve

What he said. Note to self. Plug closest to the front of the engine is the oil drain plug. This isn’t a mid engine vehicle.
