I don’t know if this happens or not while disconnecting both posts on a 3rd Gen Tacoma, but I recently serviced the battery to remove corrosion. It took me about two hours to clean that stuff off…FFW, I couldn’t help but notice a hard downshift (sometimes two downshifts at a time, like it didn’t know what the fuck to do!!!!) when giving the beans to WOT after connecting it and driving. Thankfully that is going away.

I went to figurin’…IF indeed the transmission has to learn again, I’m going to let it know what I want and how I want it. It’s not a 3 mile truck that just came off the dealer lot where I have to baby it for sometime. Hey, it’s a new truck. At least that’s the way I treat my new vehicles.

Now, it’s acting a bit different in that a slight input in gas makes it downshift smoothly and away we go. A medium input will downshift firm and there is no lag time. Man, away we go. It’s WOT from a cruising speed that it does not like. That’s where the lag time kicks in in certain situations. Not all. Sometimes it kicks down and before you know it you’re in the 3500 zone feeling great acceleration and then bam, 4500*. However, sometimes off cruising speed on a road, say 45mph, give it WOT in this truck and there will be a short “okay here we go” and then the downshift introduces the somewhat slow acceleration…My guess is Toyota has a built in sensors to save the drivetrain from doing damage when it senses WOT (sometimes, but enough).

Or…placebo does it again. But I’m doubting it because of one thing that wasn’t happening before. That’s reaching the top of a crest. I’ve experienced a couple of times where I kept constant on the gas pedal reaching the crest of the road after a moderate climb and once I was almost level, it smoothly kicked down a gear for a smooth, but slow acceleration. Instead of just lagging in the taller gear and forcing me to give it more frijoles. That’s cool to experience in this 3rd Gen.

    * I believe this truck has that great acceleration when a 3/4 input on the gas pedal is given instead of a WOT attempt.

disconnecting the battery doesn't reset the learned values. fyi, You have to use techstream or another bi-directional scan tool that has the capability. i think it resets the fuel trims though so maybe that's what you're feeling.

Have you done ANY fluid services on the tranny? Differentials? I’d start there if not.

Its easy to drop the trans pan and replace the filter and clean the magnets as well. $60 for filter, $60 for fluid, $60 for gasket. Do eet!

Just be glad it isn't a Subaru CVT, then all the hand-wringing would have a point.

Do all the Toyota "r" transmissions have the same bolt pattern to mate to the engine? Looking to adapt a r155 to a TDI

I don’t know what you mean but my ‘17 doesn’t exhibit unusual shakes doing those . It’s similar to my ‘13 Fj or my wife’s ‘07 4Runner .
