Hey I'm a 2017 tacoma owner with the same problems as others on here. Let me discribe some of my experiences , inconsistant up shifting ( not smooth ), going around a turn and the engine and transmission seem like they are trying to make a decision wether to down shift or not , on level ground slowing down from normal speeds the transmission downshifts like a automatic SCHOOL BUS. Also when using the cruise control , if you set it at 60MPH , and cancel it , then coast down to 58MPH , the darn thing practically shifts to 3 gear , thats nuts. And then it feels at times like it is lugging, its as if the transmission and engine and speed sensors are not talking to each other...
I've owned a 2005 , and 2010 Tacoma and the 5 speed transmissions were not like this at all.
Please , you guys at the top , hope you are listening and come up with some update to make this a more smooth running truck.

First thing I would do is have the Dealer check the fluid level as some are shipped low.

I started the thread linked above a bit ago. There's some really good info in it.

Your issues are not unique. Definitely ask the dealer to check fluid level as I did. I think you'll find that it's low from the sound of your symptoms.

Good luck. A good portion of us who own 3rd gen trucks with the A/T are in the same boat as you. Read the thread above, you'll see some instructions on how to operate the trans more efficiently. Made a world of difference for me. My truck does NOT like to lug around like my old V8 Chebby did.

Compared to the 2nd gen, I found the AT in the 3rd gen to be persnickety at best. I had a vehicle that drove similarly before. I got rid of it.

Now, you'll find guys on here that swear there is zero issue and that you probably just don't know how to drive it, and to a certain extent they are right.

A 3rd gen is NOT like a 2nd, where you just slap it in D, set the cruise, and go. From what I gather it requires a little more finesse...

Maybe give it a little more time. See if yours has the "update" on it and go from there.

I spend lots of my life in rental cars and these transmission issues are not unique to Toyotas in my opinion. As we've moved into the world of multiple overdrive gears, things have gotten really shifty. The good news is that Toyota still offers a manual transmission as an option.

This is refreshing. A thread on the automatic.

I'm starting to get the surging when my truck is cold. It almost feels like it wants to start in 3rd gear then drops to first and by this time the throttle is half pressed.

Not sure on the TSB or if the fluids were actually checked when I bought the truck, even though I repeatedly asked them to.

Still love my truck! I'm a complaining fan boy.

My first Taco, zero issues. I understand the shifting issue, but after 1200 miles the truck learned my habits and I have absolutely no issues with the infamous shifting.

Yeah that's not what I'm referring to. I don't have those issues either.

When I first start driving it it does the hesitation downshift feeling. After that no problems. I do park my truck nose first down hill at home and at work and I just attributed it it rolling forward and up shifting right away.

Mostly happens when I'm rolling through a stop. If I come to a complete stop no problems.
