I attempted to check the harness today. I was able to check the standard resistance for slt+ slt- slots and had a good reading. When I went to check each one individually for a short I could not get a reading on either...maybe I didn’t have a good ground? I’m not sure. I don’t know what else to do I attempted to get to the harness which plugs into the transmission but for the life of me can’t get it off. The bolt which holds it on is rusted and at best I’ll probably just strip it.
When the truck is running there is clearly a rattle and gurgling coming from the trans body almost as though it’s trying to pull fluid through but can’t.
While driving it seems to shift fine, however, when accelerating from a complete stop it is hesitant at first and I have to give it quite a bit of gas.
Not sure what else to do at this point.

The local stealership doesn’t do transmission work they sub it out to a transmission shop...so I really don’t feel confident in going that route. But I feel as though I’ve exhausted my abilities.

OK if the bolt for the harness is all rusted out ,you may be better off taking the truck in . Most transmission shops have the tools to get those bolts loose as well as the proper diagnostic hardware to fix you up quickly . If they accidently break the bolt , then they are on the hook to fix it , not you .
When the transmission ECU sees a problem with the wiring , the ECU will set a code , In your case 2716 .
2716 will put the transmission into limp home mode and the ECU tells the transmission to start off in 2nd gear rather than first gear in an attempt to prevent further damage to the transmission . This could be what you are feeling or why you find the transmission sluggish . It may be starting off in second gear which requires a little more gas pedal .
When 2716 code is tripped , the ECU will also ramp up the pressure inside the transmission to prevent further damage . You could be hearing hydraulic valve resonance which is very common when the transmission is in limp home mode .This may explain your rattling and gurgiling description.

I beleive you have a short or corrosion in your wiring between the transmission and ECM .Not a broken wire , but a bunch of corrosion
You can save a few bucks by using Rostra parts rather than genuine Toyota parts as mentioned earleir in the postings . I doubt transmission shops keep these in stock mind you .
If this is a daily driver , you could give these guys a shout to compare prices . They are cheaper than genuine Toyota parts and work just as well .

If everything goes well at the transmission shop .guesstimate .$200 labor and $200 in parts to get you mobile

i would never consider the dealership to fix this issue $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I appreciate all the insight gearcruncher you’ve been more than helpful I owe you a beer!

If it’s a matter of swapping the harness I could probably throw a pair of vise grips on the bolt and replace it new. I figured messing with it may have broke up some of the corrosion but guess not. The code is very consistent, the second I clear it it’s back on instantly which would explain a short somewhere. I’ll give it another shot with multimeter.

From what I’ve read these ecms are pretty reliable and rarely fail so that’s most likely not the problem either.

Decided to recheck the fluid level which was all good. I rescanned for codes and this time I had the p2716 po778 p0748. Did a reset and now only 2716 remains. All electrical circuits malfunction for solenoids. This may be due to me unplugging from the ecm to check for resistance.

Did changing the Solenoid fix the issue?

It did for a day or so. Turns out a pin at the harness had broke loose over time and stuck in the female side. Had to have the positive side wire for the slt solenoid rewired. My local transmission shop actually told me that’s the third 4Runner where that has happened and they had to rewire the terminal.
Back to normal now running great!

Which harness are you speaking of exactly? Because the harness I am thinking of goes into the Neutral Safety Switch.
