    my ‘20 shifts the same as my daughter’s old ‘17 with all the TSBs applied.

    So there's your answer. Halfway decent performance with ECT and S4 or S5 and all of the TSB's. In my case it eliminates most of the gear searching and drives almost as well as my wife's 2015 Off Road V6 AT. Drives better than her truck at high RPM's.

    Just purchased a 2020. My first Tacoma, but coming from an older F150 V8 w/ 4sp auto, the Tacoma shifts A LOT between 4,5,6 when on the highway in comparison. But, not much more than my wife's Toyota Venza w/V6. If the previous years of 3rd gens shifted more often than the 2020, I can't imagine what that must have been like.
