    Hi all,

Looks like my less than a month old 2025 Tacoma may need to have the transmission replaced per the dealer. Obviously, it's under warranty, but is this something I just deal with and accept? Don't really love the idea of it having major issues this soon but not sure if I have any recourse other than just having them fix it. If it helps, I am in California. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Warranty is a significant justification of why many choose to buy a new vehicle.

They aren't going to fix anything, they are just going to swap out the whole trans. So you'll have a brand new one.

Drive it. In a couple years you'll forget it ever happened.

Another option. Check out California's "Lemon Law" for your 2025 Tacoma, only less than one month.

These things happen. Have it replaced and motor on. Buy a lotto ticket too.

Have it fixed. If it still bothers you then sell the truck.

Sorry to hear, but based on the info provided, either play the lottery, or stop trying to engage reverse on the highway. Hope it works out.

    And, welcome.

    Glass half full……..
Toyota is giving you a new transmission, you get a rental while they do the work, and you didn’t have to fight for it…….and you’re not stuck on the side of the road @3AM in the middle of nowhere.

This is the case with any new gen first two or three years. I would not be worried, just let them replace it. You have the warranty, nothing to be worried about. Toyota always takes stuff like this seriously, they will improve the next year 4th gen trans by looking at what went wrong here

Let them replace it. Open a case with Toyota corporate and say you lost confidence in the truck. Politely ask for an extended warranty.

Move on with your life after that.

I agree with this guy, communicate by email if possible for a paper trail, be polite but firm. My rear diff was full of metal and replaced 100km after I bought the truck new. 4 years on and I was only reminded of it from your post.

California is a bit of an outlier in many respects when it comes to laws - esp business/consumer related laws.

That said, the normal procedure for lemon law is having to have 3 work orders/3 repair attempts for the exact same issue during the warranty period. If it can't be fixed after 3 attempts, you can invoke your lemon law almost certainly.

At that point, you can get an attorney if you wish, and make the MFG buy back the vehicle plus pay attorney fees.

I get your hesitation, it's very unnerving. I doubt you have much leverage as far as making the dealer take the vehicle back, but you'd want to check the laws or call your local BAR association for a legal referral and counsel.

I'd be curious to know if this transmission replacement is going to show up on the Carfax, in detail. That would potentially hurt resale value I would think. I know me, if a car had a new transmission in the first few thousand miles, I'm not likely to touch it, I don't care how reliable it was after that. Why bother when there's 1000s of other vehicles to look at on the market?

Anyways, good luck in whatever happens, I hope it works out for you in a positive fashion.

It’s only a transmission , don’t even think about it let them replace it and enjoy the truck . That’s what a warranty is for . It’s not a sign , it’s not anything but a failed part .
