Those gears are in the “upside down”. You need to channel your crazy and get back to this thread.

 

Here are some actual images, straight from my contact at Aisin, of 5th and 6th gears inside the AT for the 3G Tacoma.

Here’s 5th. It’s a standard double-refractory boloid gear set with transverse-dimensional planetary internals:



And here is 6th gear. It’s what they call a “future gear”. It doesn’t exist yet, but will appear if you go fast enough.

I too just had to take my 2016 SR to the shop because it was having some weird hesitation that I thought was just part of the trucks quirks. I was told by a tech the same thing so didn’t think much of it. At 44k miles I’m now having to do a complete transmission swap thankfully under warrenty! It got really bad when shifting from 3rd to 4th around 20-30mph. It was start feeing like it was stalling then return to normal.

 

You must have purchased one of the platinum warranties, or aftermarket to be covered on a 7-7.5 year old truck. Either way, good to hear they are taking care of it, and strange to hear a failure.
