Transmission rpm at highway speeds

I have a new 2023 Tacoma with a little over 1,000 miles. I noticed at 70 mph it sits at around 2000 rpm for most of the time. Occasionally it will drop to about 1800, but any little hill or even a gust of wind sends it back to 2000. I tried shifting it manually but in 6th gear it was still at 2000. Does it have an overdrive? Subsequently gas mileage is not great. Will it improve over time?

 

5th and 6th are both overdrive gears.
It’s normal for the torque converter to unlock to help power.

 

You cant force an auto trans into a higher gear. If the load, and throttle position dictate a downshift, the trans will downshift. Welcome to the Tacoma shift dance. Ski

 

Put in in S-drive and bump it to 5.

This will gear lock it so it doesn't go into 6th gear.
