Transmission Service Interval - Aisin Recommendations

If you want to continue to be extremely OCD about something, you do you. I don't need to have research to see what I've seen in countless Toyota vehicles through the years.

 

If following the recommendation of engineers, Toyota, Aisin is OCD then yes I will continue. I will continue to "you do you" based on fact rather than opinion. And for each of us its our truck and our $$$

 

I had a T100 for 20+ yrs. Pulled the first motor and trans (an A340 I *think) at 330K to swap in a V8 drivetrain with same model trans. Put another 150k on it.

Only did occasional drain/fills. Never any issues and that truck got beat on.

The problem is (and I've been there mind you) people will stress and worry about things so much so they can overdo it. Fact of the matter, regardless of the engineer being paid to tell you to go change something to make their company more money, I have seen people change their fluid religiously and have problems, I've seen people NEVER change their fluid and their vehicle will last 30+ years. I mean really, you do what you think is right for your truck, as you said, your money. But I'm not losing sleep about whether I should spill and fill at 50k or 100. I run a trans cooler on my truck, which elongates the fluid life as well. So yes, I do care... but no offense, some folks just can't wait to find something to worry about. The A750 transmission is absolute tank. Rest easy.

I’ve got 2 magnafine 3/8 filters sitting in my shop and I’ve been meaning to install them in my power steering and transmission cooler but I’m unsure a good place. Would you happen to have some more pics of your install?

 

I gather the photo of the PS install works for that part.
As for the ATF install you can put it almost anywhere. You just need some 3/8 diameter cooler hose and your choice of clamps.
Assuming you have more than 5000 miles on it you need to place it in the cold return line to the transmission as show in picture #2.
Nothing fancy. Just add some more hose to that loop and place it somewhere you can easily get to it when its time to change. Just make sure the flow direction (or input marking) of the magnefine is hooked up to match the flow direction of the ATF back to the transmission. If in doubt you can unhook the line from the OEM cooler that you think goes back to the transmission, put a short piece of cooler hose on it and place other end in a container. Have someone start the car for second or two. If atf is flowing out of that your are golden.

Note. Since you may lose a little ATF during the install and the magnefine filter itself will hold a little also you may want to go to the trouble of doing a fluid level check on the transmission just to be safe. I have an ultragauge that will show me the ATF pan temp so it wasnt a big deal. I did the magefine install at the same time as i did a drain and fill which was also to done to verify the factory fill was correct since there have been reports of it being underfilled.


My install is a little more complex because there is also a 180 Degree oil thermostat and an additional aircraft style stacked plate cooler in the loop that is off to the left of that photo

 

for those that are interested this is my rest of my AFT filter/cooler loop. I just used a piece of aluminum flat bolted to the center support. It was long enough it actually rested on parts of the front bumper supports on both ends. And by mounting it this way its out in the middle and doesn't block the airflow to the condenssor /radiator like those nylon things you push thru the fins of the cooler and rad..

The atf goes thru OEM cooler first. Then to thermostat (then to aux cooler if over 180) and finally thru magnefine on its way back to transnission. I am a fan of spring steel band clamps over the worm gear style.

Yes the power steering pic works… I’ve probably only ran my atf cooler for 3,000 miles at this point I’m waiting for an improved racing thermostat bypass to turn the fan on at 185 to arrive Friday and then I plan on tackling this project this weekend. I’ve got some 3/8 ID Continental rubber hose with spal fan currently working through my push button CH4x4 switch as needed

 

The one component in the transmission that will love you keeping fluid fresh isn't even in the transmission, it's the torque converter. Modern transmission fluid has special friction modifiers so the converter can engage partial lock up for whatever reason (economy).
Keeping fluid cool is good for it's longevity but the friction modifiers do eventually deplete and can cause shuddering. As far as I know the 6 speed in these trucks do not have many TCC shudder issues (I could be wrong, but I don't see it being discussed on here).
The RAV4's of the 2000's had ALOT of shudder issues and keeping on top of the fluid changes would eliminate the problem. In the late 90's, Honda had a huge shudder issue with their torque converters. The dealers used to come to the Dodge dealer I worked at to buy the Mopar ATF +3 because it was the only fluid at the time that had the additive package to stop the issue from coming back.
Personally I don't believe in lifetime fluid or a sealed transmission. It's a bullshit marketing ploy, change your transmission fluid every 60K and that should be be fine. These trucks have pretty rugged transmissions.

I have noticed with factory cooler (tow package) that unless I am stuck in traffic with 90+ temps the secondary cooler i installed hardly ever comes into play (I can tell by feeling the hoses going to the cooler which is of course after the thermostat which is a 180). So far my ultragauge has never shown a pan temp greater than 175F no matter what the drving conditions.


For day to day diving this is indeed overkill but i installed it since i could very well be towing a small trailer in the future)..

Just mentioning it because you may never see the fan kick on at 185C if you have both the factory cooler and an add on like me..

And you may want to seriously consider an actual oil thermostat if you have both coolers. When i first did the install of the secondary ATF cooler without the oil thermostat it brought the temps down to like 120F in the summer and I knew this would result in way to cool temps in the winter. With the oil thermostat in place the temps are in the normal range in the winter since the system acts like there is no secondary cooler.

 

I actually removed my factory cooler when installing my aftermarket cooler and I did notice that myself however mine seems to run hotter than yours. I see 200-215 degree temps from time to time which I am running 33.5” tires with trd pro engine skid with RCI transmission and cat skids currently in Tennessee which has been very hot here lately. I tow a 16 foot trailer from time to time with mower or to haul off junk that accumulates to city dump. Current temps as I type this.. thanks for the information and photos! Which thermostat bypass are you using?

 

Whats the rating in your cooler? The stacked plate one I have even though its the smallest on in the Derale catalog is very efficient at 20,000 BTU.
You must certainly see higher temps than i do in Toronto. Highest temp this summer was about 89F.

Well said and i agree with it all.. I very much like the fact that the A750 is a full sized transmission compared to the lunch box sized ones found in some FWD vehicles.In fact in some cases its bigger than the engine and transmission together. And the fact that it found its way from the full sized Tundra down to the Tacoma makes me feel even better...

 

Interesting. I did a full fluid exchange with Amsoil and it shifts better and the original fluid was not bad looking either. Did you do a full exchange or drain and fill?

 

Toyota does not OWN Aisin, they hold a less than 25% share in the company.

 

This is the cooler I went with tbh bc it was a very easy fit to 3rd gen with brackets it came with. Idk why they don’t list it as all generation bc it fit very well on my 2017 in place of the oem cooler.
Oh we’ve seen 101 this summer with 90% humidity at times. I may try the ANL fittings bc it was tough getting hoses on without kinking them off some. Had to cut a few different times.
