Transmission Shudder

I've got a 2011 DCLB 4x4 I bought used with 110K that has the same issue, shuddering at 37mph 1100rpm. It goes away right at 40mph or if I put it in 4th gear it doesn't have the issue. I called the local Toyota dealer (Roseville CA) and the head tech knew exactly what the issue was. He recalled it exactly and stated this is a known issue from Toyota. He said it's an engineering flaw in the truck Apparently Toyota is "working" on a solution but he has no idea when that would be. This is very frustrating. Anyone else having this same problem?

 

Your truck was due for a transmission service at 60 k . Do you have records that support the transmission service was completed ?
Do you have records that show your last tune up and throttle body cleaning ?

I don't because it was bought used. I may go back and see what the dealership I bought if from did too it but I assume they didn't clean the throttle body.

Once you get that mess figured out , go back to my first link and start reading . There is an overwhelming amount of info .
I will try and help you read between the lines

 

No major service records done. The truck has 110K and no service records done after 78K. No safety recalls for my truck either. Nothing major has been done to it besides standard service (oil changes, tires, brakes etc.) Now to go dive into all the information you provided.

Yup , I was getting to the lubeguard . The best stuff on the planet as far as I am concerned .

i have 75k on my Tacoma and a lot of that was towing a 5k pound trailer 5 days a week. Was considering the AT Protectant after using the instant shudder fix with good results. I did change out the ATF and put in a synthetic at 60k, no issues yet that i know of but wanted to help the truck out possibly

 

I'm having exact same problem .shudder between 25-45mph.and the transmission seem like it shifting to early .wants to go to over drive to early it seems .it won't do any of this and drives very nice if I put the gear selector to 4th.and also no shudder if I accelerate above 2500 rpm

All recalls up to date
-leaf packs
-driveshaft and carrier bearing
-frame

Trans has had Fluid change but not a flush

Thinking of bringing into dealer for trans Ecm reflash (tsb 0393-09)

Any info would be great
Very odd that it drives great in 4th gear and shift points are great too

 

Any idea why these shudder issues only happen in "D" but shift normal in "4"?

 

Your transmission is designed to shift into the highest gear possible as fast as possible in order to save you fuel . When this happens , a tremendous load is placed on the engine . You can almost feel your engine lugging when this occurs . Huge loads are also placed on the transmission while in ( D ) at 30-45 mph . As soon as you drop to 4 , the gear ratio in the transmission changes giving the transmission and engine a mechanical advantage over the driving wheels . Less load is placed on the engine when you are in 4th

 

Ok thanks .going to do a few drain and fills to see if it fixes shudder . What symptoms would come from dirty TB and map sensor ?

 

Serious engine lugging .
When the engine is under that much load and not running up to snuff , it makes the transmission feel like its shuddering .

If you plan to do the throttle body yourself , make sure the battery is disconnected so you get a proper idle re-learn during re-start . Replace your spark plugs if you havnt done them

 

Was having the 2nd gear shudder. But it also persisted in 3rd gear at low acceleration. The "Shudder" was at first noticeable but the next day became heavy and consistent. I took the day off and took the truck directly to the dealership. My friend works at this dealership and always takes care of me. But hes the type that if you're not having an issue and the maintenance manual doesn't direct a transmission fluid drain and fill or a flush for that matter. Then theirs no need to have it serviced. I know per Toyota these new vehicles have a "Forever" transmission fluid that never needs to be changed and I really think that's BS. My friend did say some of these 3rd Gen Tacomas the 16's and 17's came with low trans fluid from the factory.

When my friend drove the truck he was shocked that the truck was shuddering pretty bad. He had the Master Technician/Foreman whatever you want to call them drive the truck. He agreed it was the "Torque Converter Shudder/Flex. He stated that if the Flush and Fill doesn't fix the issue I would need a new transmission. They kept the truck overnight, they had to drive the truck in the morning cold and check the level. Sure enough the torque converter ate up some more fluid. They refilled to level and the issue was solved. I hope this helps anyone that is going through the same issue.

My truck is a 2017 4x4 Off Road with 128,000 miles. I will add a picture of what was written and done.
