I have an intermittent issue with my Automatic transmission. Occasionally it will shudder when at low rpm and starting to accelerate. If I lift then reapply the gas, it will go away. Any ideas?

~112k miles. I bought the truck in June of this year at ~108K. I dont know when the last fluid change was, but I asked for it to be done at the dealership this month and they gave me the "its a closed system, do you have any problems with shifting" talk. I mentioned the shudder but said I didnt have issues with shifting (true). they didnt do the fluid change and said they couldnt reproduce the shudder.

I bought the truck from a different Toyota dealer and they gave me a list of "suggested/optional/near future" repairs, and Tranny fluid flush was on that list.

search results dont describe my particular problem.. they focus more on the 3-4gear shift. mine is more of a low rpm/torque issue.

just do a full (13 quart) change yourself. Its an easy and well documented process even on the "sealed system". If its at 112k miles, you are almost 60k miles past due.

I had this problem with mine, did the Trans oil change and it took care of it, the change is pretty easy just follow the steps to ensure Temp is correct before you drain some of the oil. Best of luck.

Thanks Titus. Did you do the full flush (13qt) or the drain and fill (3qt)?

I did the entire drain and refill. It was pretty easy. There is a thread on here giving step by step directions.

Did you ever do the trans oil change? If so did it fix the problem? My truck just started doing this. Thanks

I added the Dr tranny shudder fix, worked for a little bit. I have some Toyota ws atf on the way, and will be doing the tranny flush when it gets here. Was hoping it would be here today, but will probably have to wait till next weekend. I'll report back when I get it done .

@Tramz720 I finally got around to doing my ATF changed. I dropped the pan, cleaned it and the magnets, changed out the filter and gasket, and replaced ~6.5qts of Toyota WS (including 10oz of Lubegard Platinum and 2oz Dr Tranny shudder fix). First 10 miles, it was noticeably better, and I'm hoping it'll improve a bit more after it gets worked in.

    6.5qts?

Probably overfilled. It only takes 3.25 quarts to refill the pan.

~3.5 drained out of the pan, another 1/2 when I dropped the pan, then 2.5 out of the cooler line. Checked the level in AT Temp check mode, so its all good.

Thanks for getting back to me! I actually did the atf change yesterday, but just a drain and refill. Night and day difference. Shudder gone
