Transmission shudder

    I'll take a look if I remember when I'm at work. I hate seeing an unhappy customer.



    Don't be surprised at how many things can only be duplicated by the driver. A lot of things, like in your case, will only happen under very specific conditions and this case I believe is driving pattern/habit. If only you guys knew the hours I've spend test driving a car attempting to reproduce something a customer can do naturally. Think of it like a tone from a material...how it will only resonate at a specific frequency.

    I understand, I use to work for a Pontiac dealer several years ago. That's why it's very important for the service writer to articulate the drivers information that leads to the symptom. The dealer should have the customer drive the vehicle with a service representative if the problem cannot be duplicated during a solo run. In my case, I was finally allowed to duplicate the shudder with the Service Director while he was sitting in the passenger seat. I think the driving pattern belief would be more valid to me if I had not drove another 2010 Tacoma for several hundred miles before this one was delivered and that one ran just fine with no obvious shudder. There must be a problem somewhere! As I said, if I am told this is normal someone else is going to enjoy this vehicle and its shudder in the near future. I will keep the faith for now that this problem can be fixed providing Toyota steps up to the plate.

    Thanks for the information and diagram. Has anyone heard of a sensor failing which could not be detected during Toyota's health check since it only occurs on occation? Which sensor would likely more control the torque converter operation to engage and disengage at a programed speed? Although I still have not heard back since they allegally contacted Toyota for guidance last Friday, this looks to be a favorable area to start testing but the dealer is hesitating taking any direction from me but and I think they are stumped for now.

    Still dealing with this shudder, I drove the truck several hundred miles with little change. This Thursday, I have an appointment at the dealer this Thursday where Toyota Tech. instructed the dealer to reset the ECM a different way to solve tghe shudder. I am getting it much more now while slowing to a stop (20 mph) then speeding up. They have apparently re-focused on the electronics once again and, not the actual torque converter or solonoid for now.

    Just had my torque converter and tranny replaced. 07 Prerunner with 96k on it started to shutter like hell. Took it in and my torque converter was complete blown out and ending up having to replace the tranny because all the contaminants from to torque converter went back to the tranny. 3200$ f'n dollars. Good thing I bought a extended warranty on the truck. No it wasnt MOGI LOL.
    UPDATE- This all happened a week ago and just got the truck back yesterday. Tranny fluid leaking from the bell housing BAD_ took it to the shop and now there saying its a faulty torque converter from toyota. THIS IS STARTING TO SUCK VAGINAL DISCHARGE

    Update: My 2010 Tacoma is back at the dealership waiting for a special Tech to arrive from Toyota. The Service Director and I called Toyota Corp and advised them more help is needed with this one. The dealer tech did a couple of different programing changes again and the Toyota Factory Tech is to arrive on Monday. I already spoke to the General Manager of the dealership about my problem. They did step up to the plate and advised me if this problem is not fixed to my satisfaction the vehicle can be replaced. This is not normal.

    Got the truck back today. Toyota sent a factory tech to the dealer to examine and assist the local tech for my shudder. I will give them credit for being proactive now. They have reprogramed the transmission and flushed it three times in a row to completely eleminate possible contamination effecting the torque converter. I was instructed to drive it a couple of hundred miles then return to the dealership for a follow-up examination. I give them credit for trying, we will see if they found the problem. Wish me luck!

    I got a call from Toyota Corp on June 2nd. They wanted to follow up on my shudder issue. Apparently, I was lead to believe by the dealer that a Tech from Toyota was going to show up at the dealer and address my problem. Apparently some personal problems changed that. The dealer communicated on the phone with him and carried out his instructions, I was disappointed because I left my truck for 4-days over a weekend. Shudder has been reduced for the most part during acceleration but still remains intermittenly when cold while coming to a stop. I am still putting miles on it as per their instructions to determine if more improvements are noted. This will be my 6th documented visit for the same problem but trying to avoid the lemon law.

    Thought I would share my conclusion, factory rep responded to the dealer and found issues between with the way the truck was serviced during my complaints. As a result of everything, I was allowed to either receive a refund minus my rebate or get a new tacoma and toyota would give me credit for the rebate. I really thought they would just replace the transmission but that was not an option so I am now the proud owner of new silver Tacoma SR5 on Toyota's and on the dealers nickle, wish me luck!

    Hey all, I'm not currently a Tacoma owner but I do own a 2007 FJ that I just bought certified used a couple months ago. I seem to be having the exact same problem with my FJ as the OP had with his Tacoma.

    I've documented my story over on the FJCruiser forums with still no resolution from Toyota. I found this posting while searching for other people with similar problems. I'm only posting here to share information as this looks like a problem with Toyota torque converters as there are 3 different models of toyotas with TSB's for torque converter shudder. Unfortunately for me, the FJ isn't one of em.

    I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma and mine shudders only on D at approx 35-40 mph. If I let go of accelerator the shudder stops. My truck has 112000 miles any advice will be appreciated. Thx

    I think mine is doing the exact same thing. I have an 07 with about 120k. Mine seems to do it more often when I'm going real easy on the throttle combined with a little resistance such as turning slightly or a slight incline. It also seems to be getting worse and I don't have time to take it in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    i am not quite sure, i have had the TSB done ( new drive shaft, springs, etc) and no change, took the drive shaft out and took it to a drive line shop they said no problems at all with my drive shaft no balancing needed or anything

    My 2012 does the exact same thing, pretty much since it was brand new. The shudder starts right around 37 mph when it shifts into 5th and goes all the way to around 45 mph. It's worse when going up a slight incline.

    The only solution I've found is to keep it in 4 and then shift into D after 45 mph. I knew I should have gotten the 6-speed...

    I think this is different from the driveline vibrations. For me it only occurs only when in 5th gear and very low rpms. When I leave it in 4th or lift off the throttle there are no vibrations. If it was a driveline issue, I don't think it would matter what gear I'm in. It feels like the engine is lugging.
