I have noticed a similar "slip" when traveling up hill at low rpms. Truck is under no load. It almost feels like I'm on wet grass trying to grab traction but I'm actually on pavement. It's a very subtle feeling and not as drastic as slipping on wet grass but that's what it reminds me of. I don't notice it if it shifts and runs at higher rpms. At this point I'm tired of wasting my time taking it into the dealership for these things on a brand new truck. I'm waiting on a call from Corp for the open case that I have and am going to mention this as well so it's documented whether it's anything or not.

    Update**

They told me that mine was running to spec and since it idled at the right RPM that there was nothing they could check, even though I specifically told them that I wanted them to check and verify the level of transmission fluid. Truck is still stuttering from take off or when switching from R to D.

For the guys with the R to D delay, have you tried pausing in Neutral?

    Hey Split ?
What are you trying to ask me here ?
When you put the transmission in Neutral , there are no circuits within the transmission being used ,therefore the engine will free rev anticipating you are going to select forward or reverse

In reference to the post I quoted...
When braking, at rest, or coasting do these trucks go to neutral idle via a control valve?

They stay in gear all the time
Lets say you have your foot off the gas pedal at highway speeds or you hit the brakes , the truck will downshift and the fuel injectors cut out but never will the truck shift into neutral .
If you are at a complete stop waiting for the red light to turn green , the transmission remains in first gear

My dealer said the Hydra-Matic system in the Tacoma is state of the art. I would get used too it over time. They can always balance my torque converter later if needed. Plus Toyotas come with a 100,000 mile warranty.

I think most of the delays in shift we are talking about here are less than 5 seconds from R to D. Why should I have to wait 5 seconds? Why should I have to wait 2 seconds? Thats too long and while I am no expert bad things are happening inside the tranny while that delay is going on...

Backing out of a parking spot the waiting 5 seconds for a shift into drive could get you into a seriously bad traffic situation.

5 second rules are for dropped food NOT reverse to drive cold shifts. Heck my floors are pretty clean and I am not eating anything off the even after 2 seconds. Lol.

One thing I have noticed when I shift from R to D when it is cold is if I wait for the engine revs to settle to 800 from the initial spike(roughly 1300-1500), the delay is gone. This is about the same time the delay lasts when I do not let the revs settle. I still do not think this is right considering the other automatics my parents have had in the past. This is the first auto I have personal owned.

I didn't, but at lunch I forgot to wait 2-3 sec, and I definitely had the delay again

I've been reading interesting stuff in an older Toyota ECT PDF...

"Neutral to Drive Squat Control---When the transmission is shifted from the neutral to drive range, the ECU prevents it from shifting directly to 1st gear by causing it to shift to 2nd or 3rd gear before it shifts to 1st gear. It does this in order to reduce shift shock and squatting of the vehicle."

"The ECU cancels torque converter lock-up when the brake pedal is depressed, and it cancels the "N" to "D" squat control when the brake pedal is not depressed and the gear selector is shifted from neutral to drive."

"Engine Torque Control---To prevent shifting shock on some models, the ignition timing is retarded temporarily during gear shifting in order to reduce the engine's torque. The TCSS and ECT ECU monitors engine speed signals and transmission output shaft speed then determines how much to retard the ignition timing based on shift pattern selection and throttle opening angle."

Anyone tried R to D with ECT?
    R to S?
