When I took mine in I pointed then to this forum and stressed the fact that even if the diagnostics shows the fluid level acceptable, I would still like the plug pulled and verified. They had the transmission issues reported previously so they really didn't give me a hard time about checking it. My dealer advertises a lifetime warranty and I mentioned it when've brought it in. Hope this helps !

I am having the same issue, and dropped by the dealer. The tech check the ecu, he said some 2016s need an upgrade to repair a shifting issue between 2/3. My programming was current so he said there was nothing he could do.
I wasn't able to get them to schedule it to check the fluid until I agreed to pay for the service if it is full of fluid.
They finally took my concern seriously and agree to provide a rental car, and keep it over night, to test it cold, and check the fluid level.

    I have a TRD OR 4x4 w/ tow package.

I don't understand why if there is an issue with the truck and it not your fault why you have to pay for them to check the fluid. ? that doesn't make any sense to me. If they say i have to pay for that i would call Toyota headquarters immediately and complain that is why the truck is under warranty for pete's sake

I serviced my transmission per the repair manual. It was 3/4 quart low. It still has the delayed engagement once or twice a week. Started a case with toyota but haven't found the time or confidence to bring it to the dealer. Called the dealer and they said "it's because people aren't used to the new Tacoma transmission". That's a good one. I'll wait till a real fix comes down the line.

I know the level is good so I'm thinking something else is happening here. The 16's with tow package have a trans warmer just like the Tundra's. They have had the same issue with delay/slip we are seeing.

first ask them to check For any Tech Bulletins. If none, get them next to call Toyota Corp to see if they are aware of anything. If all else fails, leave it overnight in a spot where they HAVE to back it out and put in forward to see the issue.

I left it overnight because it was convienient for me to do that, not because I had to.

Sounds like the dealerships have the default reply down for the transmission issues. That is exactly what they told me. They said that is the way it was designed and there isn't a problem.

All I can say is that I am not leaving the dealer tomorrow until they check the fluid. Even if I have to wait for a while which is most likely.

quick question though, Does the car has to be cold for them to check the fluid?

I seen in a thread on this forum that the transmission temp has to be at a certain temp and the diagnostics determine if the fluid level is correct. I have also seen that the diagnostics are less than accurate as compared to the manual test to see if the fluid is up to the level of the plug opening.

The reason for no dipstick is that the car builders want you to believe that you don’t need to check or maintain the fluid. Many of them actually say that the fluid they use is good for the life of the vehicle. This ofcourse is simply not true

Some important info for you guyz !!

Trans fluid is made to give 100,000 miles of service before oxidation occurs at such a rate that change will be required at normal temperatures.

Normal fluid temperature in transmission to be 175 deg. F.

Rate of oxidation to double for each temperature increase of 20 deg F above normal (175 deg F). As oxidation rate doubles, useful life of fluid is cut in half.

At 175 deg F life is 100,000 miles
    At 195 deg F (20 deg above 175) life is 50k miles
At 215 life is 25k miles
    At 235 life is 12k
    At 255 life is 6,250
    At 275 life is 3,000
    At 295 life is 1500
    At 315 life is 750

At temperatures much above 300 deg F the metals in the transmission will tend to warp, twist etc. high temperatures causes the formation of varnish deposits which impair or pre vent transmission operation.

At a fluid temperature of 415 deg F fluid life is 30 minutes!

    Source: Empire Lubricants Inc.

Now if you use the above example and subtract give or take a couple of quarts , you are going to create issues within the trans from the get-go . The issues may not be too noticeable when the truck is new but they are going to creep up on you while you put some mileage on the truck

A few members on this site lost their transmission fluid in the middle of nowhere . Probably a good idea to know how to properly check the trans level at home

.There is no charge and they do not check on PDI. The dealer said that if you randomly go in and ask them to check your fluid without presenting issues they could charge. They CAN NOT charge you (set by Toyota Policies) if you go in under warranty with a concern. they have to check the fluid as part of the warranty troubleshooting process.
You go in and say there are issues with the transmission and the service manager sends the technician on a road test only to find that everything is considered " normal " after the tech comes back from the road test . With this said ,You have to find a way to get the technician to check the transmission fluid .
If it were my vehicle , I would tell the service manager that the truck slips once in a while going around corners and travelling uphills . Sometimes it takes a while for the truck to move in the morning when its cool .
These are all classic low on fluid symptoms . The technicians know this and the service manager knows this as well .
I hate dealerships as well . Havnt found a reliable dealership within a thousand miles of where I live and I make sure everyone I talk to knows it

The engine must be running when you check the fluid .
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-drain-refill-automatic-transmission.63851/
Once again , the engine " MUST " be running .
When you shut the truck off , The transmission pump also stops turning and fluid that kept all the hydraulic circuits pressurized drains back to the transmission pan .If you check the transmission fluid when the engine is off , the fluid will come flying out of the level check plug and you will beleive the trans was overfilled .
