I read on another forum where someone stated that Toyota plans to have a transmission software update by the end of January. He stated that toyota informed him these updates will be performed as customers come in to have their oil changed. I was wondering if anyone else has heard this or if this guy is just blowing smoke.

blowing smoke. I doubt toyota even views this as an issue. The engines are performing as designed to meet CAFE requirements, imo.

I was talking to a guy at work today. He was convicted complaining about his Silverado and how it always shifted into the highest possible gear and shut off 4 cylinders. He also said that it felt like the engine was lugging. Had to laugh. This is what we can expect in the future.

What's this about 2016 Tacoma automatic transmissions having issues?
I LIKE the way ito works. Suites me to a tee. Gets plenty of management tools to get it to do what I need/want.
Naturally opinions vary. And I'm ONLY speaking for myself.
    Peace - out.

This is what happens when you take a truck and give it a efficiency programmed minivan engine.

People still expect a truck to drive like a truck.

I believe that this is a Lexus engine and minivan transmission.

The second gens received an update for transmission shifting from 2-1 gears. I got it done years ago and it was great. I wouldn't be surprised if they revise thresholds for trans shifting with the 3rrrrd gens.

    Unwatching thread now.

Sounds like Toyota to me If they will replace the frame flashing ECU for the transmission should be a quick fix.

The 2nd gen got quite a few software updates over the years .
Your question is a little vague .
Software updates generally come out to fix or improve a certain issue .
I have heard that there may be a software update to reduce engine lugging issues / the transmission upshifts to 6th gear to soon on the 3G .
Until a technical service bulletin is released and enough customer complaints are documented , we will have to wait and see

Here is an example of how Toyota took care of this lugging issue with the 2012

4,700 miles on mine. great truck, but I'm definitely having minor shifting issues.. Gear hunting on cruise and low end lull when accelerating at times. Not to worried about it. But I do believe it could be improved by Toyota I'm hoping soon. thx

I just hit the ECT Power button every time I start up. And manually shift when I need extra oomph. Especially applies to the anemic 4 banger. Toyota should hang their head in shame for continuing to use this engine.

I have been told there have been multiple ecu flashes already out to dealers, i think 4. Most of the trucks built within the last month have been flashed at factory... So they tell me anyways.

@techride Yep, shuda test drove it. Mistakenly assumed it would be similar to the Rav4 4cyl which is peppy, smooth & throttle responsive. Will deal with it for a couple years then upgrade.

I must be one of the lucky ones because I have None of the Transmission issue with my TRD OFF ROAD Auto
IT shifts perfectly and never seems lug as if it is in to high of a gear. ( And I am not using ECT) And I have owned two 2n Gen 4.0 Auto Tacoma. Mine was built Dec 4th !!
