Transmission sucks

I think they all suck now, so many gears they all kind of 'hunt'.
Wait'll Toyo. starts putting 9-10 spds.

This is the exact behavior that drives some people nuts, if you're used to basically any other vehicle on the market.

 

From the complaints on tw, it'll be years before they get their 6 speed sorted.

 

Got the KDMAX tune and that solved the issue. Though, there is occasionally a gear that holds too long (revs a little high) until it's convinced you want to stay at a constant speed, then it will shift to higher gear.

My mother's lexus RX shifts just as spastically as the Tacoma did originally. However, it's hardly noticeable in that vehicle. Given the Taco has fewer gear choices than the Lexus, and a less plush ride, it's just way more noticeably odd in the truck. But as said, the tune makes it shift just like you'd want it to.

 

I have no issues smoking the tires if i stab the go petal. Truck has instant response, but then again i have low mileage. Truck never hunts anymore unless i use 92 octane gasoline. Its a different truck until i switch a few tanks of 87 back.

Finally created an account to chime in here. I had my truck for four years completely stock. I got the overland tune installed about a month ago. I really wish I'd done that a long time back. To me the truck drives so much better. I had him install the "medium" tune with "spicy" mapped to ECT, but I think I'll have him put "light" on the ECT and use that for off road situations where I want a lighter touch.

 

Use S-mode - Cheap and simple fix

I started using S-mode on my 2005 ... I found the 4L engine + tranny to be laggy on the 2nd gen, as well. FF 17 years and still using "S" on my 2016.

 

I don’t know about the others, but I HATED having to pay for a tune to fix something that should have been right from the factory. I bought a freakin Pro so I wouldn’t have to mod it!

I tried using S mode, ETC mode, and got the factory ECU upgrade by complaining to the dealer. Nothing made my truck drive even close to normally, once the transmission learned my old man driving style it would revert to sluggishness and wrong shift decisions. I’m a reluctant tune customer, not a shill.

 

same issue with mine. i get stuck behind people going super slow all the time and as a result the transmission becomes sluggish.

 

Get the Overland Tune or the KD Maxx Tune and be done with it. These tunes make all the difference in the world and don't effect your warranty. The ETC button was a good attempt by Toyota but doesn't come close to addressing the issues fully.

They are already doing this without issues.. My Rav4 has an 8 speed transmission and drives and shifts amazingly.

My brother in Tacoma, page 190 of the Owner's Manual:

"Do not use cruise control (if equipped) or dynamic radar cruise control (if equipped) when towing."


Also, page 186:
"Vehicles with an automatic transmission: To maintain engine braking efficiency and charging system performance when using engine braking, do not use the transmission in D. If in the S mode, the transmission shift range position must be in 5 or lower."

 

Well, maybe like my buddies 2019 tacoma, its one of the less performing ones. I can't complain. There's got to be thousands of other owners happy as i am that didn't need to get a tune.

 

Ah so it sounds like they purposefully sabotage cruise control for towing. I will find out soon if the regear fixes it though. It just downshifts too much.

They have to know that the US is a large country... literally 100% of people use it

 

I'm using S-mode a lot now. It gives me the control I want and makes me not miss the clutch so much. Lol!

 

And tens of thousands of owners that hate the way their truck performs.
