I've used the ECT button a few times just to check it out. Liked the behavior. Always use it when towing my 1000 pound camper on flat stretches and then use ECT and S4 when going up and down inclines.

I’m regretting purchasing an auto for sure. MT gearing isn’t as tall, and seems to be just right for these trucks.

When I drive my truck I select which gear I am in... if I am in town I top out in 4th. On the highway, 5th or 6th depending on my needs...

With the Automatic why not do the same... use S-mode to limit the gear... then it isn't constantly shifting into 6th gear in town and then lagging and bogging to downshift and accelerate. On the highway, you may find 5th better at times...

This is honestly just a question, I have not driven an auto Tacoma. I have driven multiple other auto vehicles and done this... when OD was first coming into the mainstream, they had an off button... for this very same issue... they were dogs in OD in town...

I’ve had about 30 other vehicles and of those about 20 have been autos. Never have any of them needed to be locked out of any gears to perform properly.
It’s not a deal breaker by any means, just makes Toyota look bad in this department compared to its competitors.

Like others have said it's a "learning" transmission. It will improve as you put more miles on it.

I started using the ECT button and it shifted perfect. Got the TRD shifter with the button on it. Now I hit it every time and never think about the clunky transmission except the rare occasion when I forget. Then the truck reminds me as soon as I accelerate.

Your shifter has a button that toggles ECT?

Manuals are fine if you don't drive much in cities. When i had 4wd toyota pickups in the past with a manual, those 4 bangers didn't like towing. Automatics are much better. With todays automatics your considered a dinosaur if your driving a manual mid size truck.

For me towing my 1k lb loaded utility trailer S5 works perfect. Plenty enough power for all the steeper grades when you can see the transmission downshift on the tach to 4 gear. No need to use ECT....it just wastes fuel.
A buddies 2019 trd or didn't have the same low end, or top end for that matter, and it drove him crazy. This leads me to believe these trucks don't all have the same factory setup or tune in them.

Manuals only weaknesses are stalling and clutch wear. Automatics have a major issue, heat. Pick your poison

Guilty as charged then, dinosaur all the way.

Still, some of the ratios in the RC-62F are puzzling..

You got that right. Automatics are not "better". Automatics don't tow "better". They just let people that can't drive so well still drive, or tow. I, myself, won't resort to calling a guy driving, stuck on a cloud with a burned up automatic, George Jetson.:rofl:

So the threads been hijacked into a tired standard vs. automatic rant. Too bad there’s not a way to lock a thread when it turns to shit.

I think you should talk to the guy that was talking about "dinosaurs" first.

@MESO makes a kit but these days it’s usually sold out.

ECT button just under the thumb.

Apologies, but it was Friday and this tired old "Auto Transmission Sux" thread was underachieving.
