    So my 96 tacoma 2.4L 2wd (AW-71 tranny model) tranny took a crap. I went in car-part.com to look for a replacement and I got a (A340E) Off a 2000 tacoma
According to the guys at the shop I bought at they said all I had to do was swap out my speed sensor and it would bolt right up. I now have both transmission’s next to each other and noticed the tail shaft housings are not the same?? Has anyone had experience swapping a 2000 tranny to a 96 tranny?

That is the incorrect transmission. The 2RZ-FE uses the A43D column shift transmission for 1995-2000 5-lug automatic trucks, and the A44D for the 2001-2004 5-lug automatic trucks.

The A340E is for a 6-Lug PreRunner or 4x4 truck. It will not work on your 5-lug frame.

Upon further research, I found out something very interesting. Didn’t realize The Volvo AW71 is similar to the A43/A44D.

Can you take a picture of your VIN sticker? It’ll say your transmission on it.

You can't use the A340E. It's the wrong transmission.

I need a picture of the sticker, not the VIN.

    Theyre very different transmissions

probably doable if you get a different shifter and modify the driveahaft

Just doesn’t make any sense. They’re completely different transmissions that mount differently and have different size rail sections and output shafts.

He has a 1995-2000 5-Lug Auto, so it needs an Aisin A43D.

Oh yeah im with you that he should have gotten the right trans, but it could probably be done

Physically putting the trans in shouldnt be the problem as its easy to cut and weld

But if you cant depin and repin connectors so the pcm controls it like the old trans than hes hosed

This is a VIN sticker from a 1996 2RZ 2.4l Auto just like yours. Look at the lower right hand corner, it says A43D. That is the transmission you should have. Can you confirm your sticker says A43D?

Doable, but getting the A340E to work will cost as much as getting the right one to begin with. Swapping the output shaft isn’t easy.

@BartMaster1234 I got the pic and yes it says A43D. I’m not sure why car-part.com showed me this one tho? Even the guy at the salvage yard said it was a direct bolt on. Thank god I got the 90 day warranty lol I’ll go swap it out Monday.

Word of advice, don’t trust what salvage yard people say. lol.

The A43D and A44D are unique to the 5-lug chassis. The A340E was solely used on the 6-lug chassis.
