I've read in many threads and forums that a Transmission Fluid Temp code does not exist for our 1st Gen Tacomas, especially not my 1996 model. Regardless, I tried out as many codes as I could find online and one code in particular gave me a reading:

    TXD: 07E021D9
    RXF: 032180000000
    RXD: 2810
    MTH: 00070065FE70

The display alternates between two temperatures. The first one is a temperature that is typically within 1 or 2 degrees of the engine coolant temp (around 190 deg/F). The second temperature is usually something significantly lower (like 85 deg/F) though I have observed this temperature climb significantly when I'm wheeling.

Does anyone know what this code is actually displaying? Because I doubt it is a true transmission fluid temperature.

Damn man, this is extremely thorough and very impressive. Thanks for the link!

To be clear, I'm not doubting the scangauge reading based on the temp I'm seeing - it looks normal to me. I'm just skeptical because this code is designed for 2nd Gen's. Really my question is, if there is a temp sensor in my A340F trans, is it even reporting anything back to the ECU? And is that what my scangauge is reading? And what the heck is that second temp reading?? Lol. The two pictures below show both temperatures

You will have to do more research on how your transmission reports its temperature to the ECM .
There are PDF files in that link above that will help narrow things down for you .
back in 96 I believe Toyota was working on 3 different communication platforms for communication to the ECM . 1996 was the first year for OBD2 .
This is why some guys manage to get the temp sensor reading and some guys do not .
With this being said , its how the transmission temp sensor communicates with the ecm and if the transmission temp sensor is available to be read through the ADSL connection
All -A340 series transmissions have a temp sensor . You would never get overdrive or upshifts to 4th gear without the temp sensor communicating with your ecm . The ecm in your truck needs to know that the transmission is warm enough for your the clutch in your torque converter to apply .
As far as scan gauge codes , I am no pro but I am thinking 1 value on your scan gauge screen is actually the trans temp sensor .
Pay close attention to when your torque converter locks and the temp will drop very quickly .
As for the second value on your scan gauge , I believe it is engine temp

@alexvallorosi - Did you iron out the kinks and figure out if you're getting solid trans temps from the gauge per gearcruncher's advice yet? I've also got a '96 3.4 with the A340F and have a gauge coming in the mail today.

KOEO, do you have a transmission temp light with a bulb check?

It’s gotta have some way of knowing what the temperature is then! I’ve not seen a temp sender/switch on the transmission anywhere. I’d check in the wiring diagrams and find out what turns that light on in the dash and go from there.
I installed a transmission temperature gauge in my dash along with a lot of other gauges. The transmission temp is the most boring, it never hits 200deg unless I’m towing something. I did add a fairly large transmission cooler though.

Your torque converter creates heat and if you want to know if you are in fact reading a transmission fluid temperature,TFT?
    1. Start the vehicle up.
    2. Place the transmission gear selector in drive.
    3. Rev up the engine to around 1200-1500 rpms.
    4. Watch for a generally quick rise in temp.
    5. Place the selector in either neutral or park and allow the transmission to cool down to a normal operating temp.

I did not. If you take a look at the pictures I posted, the reading in the bottom left corner of my ScanGauge in the two photos was actually just flipping between an Intake Air Temp and a Coolant Temp reading. Unfortunately I haven't found another way to get a trans temp from the computer.

Thanks for the response. I needed with mine last night using the code and got the same reading bouncing back and forth. Tried all the other codes I could find for older Tacomas online but none gave me a result. I think we’re just SOL without installing an inline trans temp gauge. C’est la vie.

Have you tried looking at this thread:
ScanGauge... clear up the trans temp myth.

Looks like there are some differing codes in there from the one you posted.

Edit, shoot - sorry, that thread seems to indicate that only certain '99, and 01-04 for that particular code. Looks like you're pre-99.
