WOAH, 10.5 year bump thats impressive.

Would be rather pointless to install a trans temp sensor on a manual in our trucks.

You're about the 10th person to tell me it's pointless, but I want to do it anyway. Since installing my crawlbox I've been a lot more conscious of how hot my sticks are getting and there are times where they have almost been too hot to touch. Nothing catastrophic has occurred and ignorance has been bliss so far, but it would give me piece of mind.

    Here's my plan:

    2 x M18x1.5 VDO Temperature Sender 323064 - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/VDO-323064 - $89.98 ($44.99 each)
    1 x 120-300 Degree VDO Vison Series Analog Gauge for Oil 310-106 - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/VDO-310106 - $38.10
    1 x 0-300 Degree VDO Vison Series Analog Gauge for Trans 310-111 - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/vdo-310-111 $46.69
    1 x Lotek 2 Gauge Pod A-Pillar - https://www.vividracing.com/lotek-dual-apillar-pod-toyota-4runner-tacoma-0509-p-49582.html $93.74

Unfortunately I can't seem to find a matching set of gauges that both run the same range of 120-300 or 0-300, so unfortunately I'll just have to deal with them being different ranges. Everything is ordered, so I'll post back up when I get this done.

Edited: Corrected part number and link for transmission gauge.

If you place the sensor where the plug goes, temp would not be accurate...

Edit: I'm taking the reading off the drain plug, not the fill plug.

@caribe makaira was probably thinking you would install the temp sensor in the inspection plug, which might not have good contact with the oil. But then again it might when everything is in motion.

Gotcha. I agree that would not do me much good unless oil happens to be splashing up at the fill plug, but that's not my plan. Planning to replace the drain plug on the crawlbox and trans with one that has a temp sensor so if I'm not coming in contact with oil I have a very different problem.

Trans currently has Redline MT90 GL4 75w90, but I will be swapping that out for Redline's GL5 rated 75w90. The tcases are just running regular valvoline 75w90, but they will both be getting the MT90 GL4 swapped in when I drain them. So after I do the sensors it will be redline GL5 in the trans and Redline GL4 in both tcases.

I say go for it, another cool looking solution looking for a problem. I'd be surprised if your man trans or tcase ever get much over 180 degrees or anywhere near "too" hot. Thrashing my Sport, 4 wheel low, I've never seen engine oil over 215 (pretty much follows coolant temp) or my auto trans, 225 (measured at the TC) short term peaks.

Please correct me if I’m wrong but GL4 is required for the MT, due to the brass syncros?

Also, correct me if I’m wrong again here, but GL5 is required in both the diffs and transfer case?

    I too run RedLine:
    MT-90 in the MT
    75w-140 GL5 everywhere else

Hope you're right. Cant hurt anything to know for certain. Temps on the outside of the trans were reading 400+ with a laser temp reader, which I am sure is ambient exhaust heat. If I were running that hot I'd be having a bad time.

I've read that too, but my service manual says GL 4 or 5 in both trans and transfer. :notsure: Our resident toyota mechanic here in the CO threads suggested I look at the GL5 rated stuff last time I put the MT90 in.

    Screenshot_20201005-080521_Drive.jpg

I have been running GL4 in everything...diffs, cases, trans since I've owned the truck. Nothing has blown up yet. :fingerscrossed:

You gonna actually do it? I'm interested, might do it on my auto. I know it's pointless and not related...

Hell with the man putting you down, #NIKE just do it.

Yes, I am doing it. Not sure how fast it will happen, but the gauges arrived yesterday. Waiting on the gauge pod.

For the auto, you know you can get trans temp with an OBD reader, right?
