    Hey folks.
    I just purchased a 2017 4cyl AT 4x4 SR. Love it.
I'd like to add a transmission temp gauge to it, because I'm paranoid about automatics. I don't want to use scan gauge or anything else that plug in to the OBD-2, I'd like to us a standard electric gauge that screws into the transmission.
Has anyone done this, and would they be willing to share where to install it? On my old F250 there was a test port with a blank bolt in it I used.
Sorry if this is a repeat, but every thread I've looked in has settled for Scan gauge or a BT OBD-2 screen.

Phew, kind of tricky to install a gauge. Plus keep in mind there are two already in there - one in the pan and one at the torque converter.

The added benefit of a scan gauge is you can also watch coolant temps, oil temps, intake air temps, voltage, and a whole mess of other numbers that the computers and sensors are already reporting. Add to that all the mileage calculations and recording and it's a pretty useful tool for us paranoid types. It also reads and clears codes if you run into trouble.

That's why you are seeing most people going that way. We tow a 5000lb rv all summer and my scangauge is my number one mod front and center.

Torque converter out port ( to cooler) is the best location to monitor transmission temp spikes

Monitoring trans temp from the pan is not a good idea as it'll read the lowest temp as it is reading after the trans cooler

I guess I'll look into it, but I lack trust in them and hate digital gauges, I much prefer analog gauges. I'd like something that comes on with the truck, without having to load everything. Most of my experience is with older vehicles, and I hate how finicky OBD-2 can be.

I've always heard the opposite, since the converter is very spikey in temperature, while the pan holds a steadier temperature and is more consistent to the entire transmission.

That's why the converter out location is the best location it'll show a problem faster ( temp spike)

With the ODB2 port via the Scangauge you get both (and a lot of other information).

If it makes you feel better the SG2 turns on when the truck starts and turns off when the truck turns off. It's one plug that goes into the obd2 port, then choose your 4 gauges to display and set the screen colour. That's it. I've had the same one in my 2nd gen and 3rd gen - for close to 9 years now with zero issue. I even bought a second for our Subaru and have run it for about the same amount of time.

Okay. But, as I said before, I'd prefer to not use a Scan gauge, does anyone know if we have a test port of some sort on the transmission that can give me a temperature?

Converter out location was what the transmission builder who built my Drag racing transmission in my Camaro highly recommended I use for reading trans temps . Sitting on the Transbrake at 4k rpm temps rise quickly , almost 5° to 10° per second .

Besides the nomenclature used here and what PIDs call it...do you know for a fact that is what they monitor?

    AFAIK,
No.1 monitors line pressure temp; used to revise clutch and brake pressures. No.2 monitors temp of cooler line; used to revise shift timing due to 'high' ATF temp and temp warning. Both located on the valvebody...

I installed a oil temperature gauge100065C9-6EAB-4CB4-A533-346532FF0832.jpg on my motorcycle by tapping the oil drain nut on the motor and now i can watch exactly what my temp is all the time. And it is an analog gauge as well.

I was hoping to avoid tapping anything, but im also used to "older crap" as my wife would say. My F250 has a E4OD trans, and it had a test port near the shift linkage that is ideal for installing a temperature sender. I was hoping this transmission would be similar.

You can purchase analog temp senders that plumb into the pressure ports or the cooling lines .
Still think the scan gauge is the easiest way to do it plus the added benefit of all the additional sensors that gauge will get you ......its a no brainer .
But for those of us who are dead set on the analog components , they work fine as well

I have some analog gauges listed in my transmission cooler write up .There are many available . Google is your friend

That's a good write up on the analog gauge. I was hoping there was a port and I wouldn't have to weld one in.

Average temp drop of atf after going thru the trans cooler is 25° to as much as 40° colder . A aftermarket plate style cooler with a fan ( Like from B&M) can be substantially much cooler temps
