So both the independent transmission place and Toyota recommended replacing the transmission. The indy recommended a three part service of transmission fluid and some kind of fix leak liquid? I can’t remember exactly what it was called but the cost is over $500 with no guarantee it will work. So I’m leaning towards replacing the transmission. Doesn’t sound like they can just replace the converter. My plan is to have Toyota order the transmission which is in backorder and if it takes longer than two weeks have the fluid service done to at least buy some time.

yea, i read your post. just not sure of the long term effects of running friction modifier on the torque converter clutch.

I would personally skip the additive, you're not a very high milage vehicle plus as I said in both my personal and professional experience you'd be surprise how much the quality and condition of the fluid will change a transmission from paperweight to brand new

not as common with newer vehicles and I don't know how Toyota autos work but flushing the cooler could also help but usually a plugged cooler in my experience manifest as the vehicle stalling when coming to a stop after a highway drive because the torque converter doesn't release making it act like a clutch in a manual when you come to a full stop without disengaging it

Another update. Because the transmission was on backorder, I decided to have the triple fluid service with shudder fix done. Drive it for about 30 min today after the service and not a single shudder. Night and day. They told me to monitor for a week and call them with an update. If all goes well for a year, they recommend another fluid service. We’ll see how it goes but for now the total replacement is on hold.

Nice it worked out . This is another example of the importance of trans fluid change at 60t miles and not as Toyota said as a lifetime fluid . I’m sure I’ll be flamed on this but it is what it is .

Update after 500 miles. The truck is driving like normal and the shudder or “rumble strip” has not returned. Transmission tech said to give it three more weeks before I do any other maintenance.

So to recap, you did a 3 part fluid change and it fixed your problems?

That’s what they did, yes. And an additive.

So what’s the name of the magic juice they put in to fix the shudder?

I had a 5.0 explorer that had the same issue at 50k miles. Added the shudder fix and problem instantly went away. I changed all the fluid right after that and every 50k there after.

Put 200k on it without any other trans problems and the shudder never came back.
