Transmission tuning? What are you trying to do? The 2020 transmission operates fine.

The stock transmission settings even after the latest TSB are hot garbage. I got vfTuner and flashed their 2.0 stock tune and it operates as it should have from the factory. The acceleration and shift points are spot on now. You can pay ~$700 for the software and tune pack (totally worth the cost), or you can do a search in the forum and find someone near you that may just charge you the cost of the credits and a small fee.

I have a 23-mile commute to work, mostly freeway with hilly terrain. I seriously thought I made a mistake getting my Taco. The truck felt lethargic, and if I had the cruise control set, it would hold at 3000+ rpm for about 10-15 seconds after cresting a hill. Now, it downshifts and upshifts like a normal vehicle and doesn't feel labored going up hills.

I have to disagree with you. I live in northeast PA and drive a combination of moderate to steep hills both highway and back roads. I never had any real issues with my transmission but did find it to be even better after the TSB. We all have different experiences and expectations - I'd suggest going about any changes in a sequential manner and see whether the TSB is the solution before adding an aftermarket tuning. Just my own $.02.

Some find the Toyota transmission tuning to be fine. Others find it to be hot garbage. I am in the latter group. If you are too, check out the many OV Tuning threads. It can be fixed. Based on my experience one of the main causes is that the shifting learning logic can end up in a wonky place for some of us. My '18, sometimes it would downshift to 5,000rpm with a feather on the pedal, other times it would hold 1,200 rpm even with a brick on the accelerator. No longer now that I've tuned it.

3K rpm...must be some long steep hills with a load if you have to do that. My 2020 goes up hills fine here in connecticut at 2200 rpm at 55-60 mph even with a couple hundred lbs. in the bed. I've rarely seen more than 2500 rpm towing my boat or utility trailer. I'm not driving at 80+...i'll own something else for that.

My opinion on the shifting is:
If you driving style is for maximizing fuel economy for the truck drives fine, if you have even a slightly heavy foot, it doesnt shift when you want it to

I average 75-79 mph and that is keeping up with the flow of traffic. The stock taco is optimized and geared for 55-60 mph, but at 75 mph speeds, a pure stock set up leaves a lot to be desired. I’m not a speed demon out there but with the tune it is nice hitting freeway speeds from the on ramp without having to mash down on the throttle.

Truck makes good power from 1500 rpm up. Blows my mind why others are complaining. I'm not one that ever drives past 75 mph.

I judge that you have low expectations, and that's fine. Others have higher expectations, and that's fine too. The good news is that the aftermarket support exists to raise the performance of the truck to meet those higher expectations.
