Anyone have any say on why my 2017 SR 4 banger. Shifts decent in the flat but shifts like trash up hills, seems to rev pretty high into 4th sometimes doesn't shift out even after reaching the top and starting back down the other side.

Just the way it is with the 2tr-fe. Especially in any sort of elevation.

that's ideal, you don't want to be in overdrive when climbing a hill. there's not enough torque.

Heavy truck, lot's of wind resistance, small engine, transmission logic and gearing to make GOV happy (not the driver)= sounds right

    welcome
not being snarky, but if you don't like the way it drives, why did you buy it?

Sounds exactly like the test drive I did in a 2020 sr 2.7 auto.....totally gutless. I ended up with the 3.5.

When you start up a hill, and before the engine starts to strain, manually downshift to 4th gear and leave it there. You may even have to go to 3rd or 2nd depending on how steep the hill and how heavy you're loaded. You and the truck will be happier. And when come down the other side leave it in 4th, 3rd, or 2nd gear to let the transmission slow you and stay off the brakes as much as possible. Just because it is an automatic doesn't mean you aren't in control.

I had a 2.7 08 Tacoma before I got my 21’ 3.5L. My experience on both is you just have get into them and lay into the skinny pedal sometimes. When it comes to hills I would say more so on the 2.7. I really had to force it to shift and make all its power on long mountain passes. Getting a running start helps a lot too. My experience of the 3.5L is that it performs a lot better and really doesn’t seem to mind the higher revs. I personally think driving it a little hard the first 10k miles (after the break in period) helped the transmission programming learn to shift when I tell it to. It doesn’t hesitate to get up and go at all anymore. I like both engines and actually preferred the 2.7 for most types of daily driving.

You have two over drives on this transmission, 5th & 6th and you’re trying to go uphill, with a 4 cyl, what else can be expected?

Use ECT, and S-4 and your situation should improve.

When I push the skinny petal down some on my 3.5 it responds instantly...no hesitation. I've never seen much over 3k rpm even on long hills. It will hold 60 mph up that hill under 3k rpm like nothing. These 3.5's are no slouch if you got one that performs well, and from what I've seen, and now heard some run great, others not so much.

So if you were going up a steep high at 60mph your truck would not down shift and keep you at 6th gear while keeping you60mph
