most people who drive Autos dont use the parking brake. i honestly dont use it unless im parking on a surface grade that would warrant it.

I certainly did, but then again the driver's ed simulator I learned on was a 3 speed column shift, so the parking brake took on a more major role :anonymous:

I have 4 other cars at home and not one does it except tacoma, how is this normal and why are you all talking about break. How is this normal. You push your brake before you put it on D. The car make clunky noise and jerks forward. How is this normal? If that's how it's designed than I guess I'll deal with it but I don't know if you guys ever drove car or truck thst don't do that. Is crazy what I'm seeing on here.

Automatic transmission should not make noise when engaging into gear and definitely should not jerk forward like the gears wore engaging with out clutch

I dunno my first truck was an 89 toyota pickup with a 5sp manual. It had that old school ebrake that you pulled OUT from the dash...and twisted to let go. It never worked. So I had to carry a 4x4 block in the bed o_O ... that was my true ebrake.

Since we’re not the decision makers here, and you know that, why not go argue with the ones that are?
Sell it, be happy, move on. As they say; Life is too short to deal with clunks and forward lurches.

Going from reverse to drive there shouldn’t be any lurching forward. Brakes should be applied and vehicle stopped before shifting from my reverse to drive. If you don’t you will have issues with the drivetrain.

There might be a more of a jerk as stated before if you shift out of park right after you first start it. Wait for the start up cycle to slow and change programming. Takes about 15 to 20 seconds.

If your truck is physically rolling forward when you shift from park to drive and the brake pedal is depressed you have an issue.

As for the clunking, every one of my rwd vehicles have done it in one form or another. Never caused an issue.

You are going to feel something every time you put a rwd vehicle into d from park with the brake on. The transmission uses fluid pressure. That pressure is suddenly rerouted through the valve bodies when you shift out of park. The body’s instant shifting of pressure surges the torque converter. The only place for that to go is into the driveline after the transmission ie the driveshaft. Driveshaft to rear end. Only thing to absorb that force with foot on the brake is u joints and rear diff. That where the clunk comes from. The rear diff gears are always engaged. Different lash setting on the rear gears produces different amounts and direction of movement between the gears when that shock travels from the transmission to the rear diff.

These trucks have quirks. Every one is different even one built right next to each other on the line. Even dimensions and measurements are different.

Drive it and enjoy it. If it bothers you trade it in. You have been some really good advice as to how to proceed. If you don’t agree with the advice don’t argue. Just move on and try something else. Best of luck.

And FYI mines clunks a bit when putting it into gear. I trust it enough to take it into the middle of nowhere in Wyoming and Montana. Where I am now.

Agreed. I learned thick skin when I first got stationed in Hawaii. It was worth being called a haole and not being invited to a lot of things. After I was accepted everything changed. If I didn’t have thick skin then I wouldn’t have the friends there now that I have to this day.

Then I joined TW and had to remember the thick skin. Hehehe.

There is life in a kindly reply.

OP mine does the same thing. I am going to do a drain/check/fill on the transmission fluid this week and see if it helps, not because of this issue but the fact the truck runs and drives like shit.

You need to try another truck or two on the dealers lot. If they all do it you either have to live with it or sell it.
Just because something doesn’t operate like you want it to doesn’t mean it’s broken…..especially if other trucks exhibit the same condition.
If other trucks exhibit the same condition, it is normal and the dealer cannot “re-engineer” your truck.

I gotta admit I only use the parking brake on my truck when parked on a grade also.

Typical quirky activities from this mini van engine/ gas mileage hunting transmission. Trade it, wait for the 4th gen to smooth out the drivetrain IMO

yeah, good lesson. Everyone makes fun of everyone in Hawaii. Then outsiders get mad and offended and try to change culture here. Never goes over well.
