Thule tailgate mate, load a bike in seconds literally. I use a bungee for piece of mind but it's not needed. ;)

Heading home from a 24 hour MTB race in Palo Duro Canyon this past weekend. 2 coolers, 3 tool boxes, 2 ezups, 4 tents, a work stand, an action packer and a bunch of camp chairs. Yep it was ass heavy. 15mpg sucks for 400miles, I was so happy to see the normal 20 on th eway to work this morning

I also made some Teflon spacers to keep the clutch tight when there is no bikes mounted. Keeps it quiet.

Believe me I hunted for a long bed for about a month. I almost went with a access cab just so I could get a long bed easier.

I have a Yakima hitch rack, but I found the "over the tailgate" method to be the easiest. Just hang a thick towel over the back to protect the paint and hang the bikes over the tailgate (see pic). I rarely use the hitch rack any more.

I actually keep a small step ladder bungeed inside the topper. It doesn't take up any space and fits perfect. Easy to grab to put the bikes on. The cargo box takes less finesse than mounting the bikes, so I just step on the tire to put stuff in it.
I know it sounds like a pain, but it's actually pretty easy to deal with.

Dang, nice job. I have a machine shop at work and have done a few little jobs for my truck, but I was lazy and just took a few measurements and ordered the correct size out of stainless from Mcmaster for free next day delivery. I realize that's not as satisfying. :) I did tap them all the way through though because I didn't like the partial thread.

Thanks, I originally was going to make them out of 316, but didn't feel like tapping 1/4-20 into stainless. I still might if I get bored at work. I didn't know McMaster had stainless slot nuts tho. Sometimes i'd rather just order things than make them if its available. Thanks for the link.
