Houston is awesome, but it's like any other city on Earth in the sense that you need to be aware of your surroundings and behave accordingly. I've never had an issue with crime per say, but I also know it's best not to hang out in any of the Wards, which are Houston's version of the ghetto/projects/etc. It's also a spawling city with a neutered mass transit system, so wherever you go be prepared to drive. It's also extremely multicultural (fun fact: Vietnamese is the third most spoken language after English and Spanish) so your culinary options are innumerable.

Regarding driving and multiculturalism, the drivers here tend to be... Lacking. There are two ways to drive here: defensive or highly aggressive. Be aware that Harris County is the #1 county in Texas for uninsured drivers, but again, drive either defensively or highly aggressively and you'll be okay.

Oh yes. Many times I'll see vehicles with both Lyft and Uber logos on them. People be hustlin'. Houston isn't called Hustle Town for nothing.

If you can, catch an Astros game. Also, the USA Rugby Men's National Team is playing Scotland on June 16th.

Even as a Texan I have always found The Alamo, well disappointing to say the least.
Much rather ride a tube down a cold river on a hot day than stop and walk around downtown S.A.
BTW, nothing against San Antonio, I like visiting buds there, just never got the vibe from the Alamo that anything but traffic happened nearby.

Edit: Kind of like "Le Brea", you know? Something happened, but walk outside and it's "now" not "then".

San Antonio is now Cyber City, USA.

And there is a significant possiblity of witnessing the Last Raza/low rider car show downtown.

I'd rec'd skipping S.A. AND Houston. Go to New Braunfels, ride the Comal and smoke a good cigar with a cooler full, relax and get back on track towards destination.

That's something hard to come by in Cal.

6inch lift sitting on bilstein coilovers. Lexus is300 studs in front to keep stock wheels, general grabber red letters, nfab front bumper.
Go float on the south llano river out by junction tx. Use to have tons of fun out there as a kid. My fiancés parents live on the comal river. Good fishing.

As for Houston, Galveston is disappointing if you are expecting clear water. Moody gardens is fun. You just missed comicpalooza at the George R brown. There are always car shows and things of that nature around.

Junction is on I-10. It wouldn't be a variance.

I'd just sure do something in cold water instead of on hot concrete, you can do that in Bakersfield.

Texas has some pretty spots, unfortunately I-10 doesn't go through them.
I know getting across a 900 mile wide state is a good chunk so you want to get on through but don't let it make an impression that's where we all live.

15 miles N. of I-10, I rent canoes on a nature preserve. You'll never know it was that close and where you'll be will seem like a sweaty armpit.
