Travelling 800 miles...

Hello everyone, I'm traveling 800 miles from mass to Michigan to pickup a 3000 pound with trailer boat. (18ft scout)
I have a 2014 taco without tow package.
I'm installing a receiver hitch today.

Quest is: do I need a tranny and oil cooler?
I've read through the towers Bible here but his write up is spongy on weight. He says get a trans cooler if your towing over 200 miles but I've seen my friend with a tiny Nissan SUV no tow package pull a 21 aquasport all day for years no problems. I'm thinking that weight as well as distance play roll, what are your thoughts?

 

3500 lbs is the towing cap without the tow pac. You're fine.

 

Couple questions. Do you have a V6 or the 4cylinder and is it a manual or automatic transmission?
I just did the same drive in reverse actually. Towed 5,000 pound uhaul from Michigan to New York. I have the V6 6 speed manual with the tow package. Did 70mph most of the way without to much trouble. I would say though take it easy and make some extra stops along the way to let the truck cool down a bit. For towing I'll drive at night since it will be a little cooler, make sure to add more air to the rear tires to help with towing. I stopped about every 200-250 miles for 15-30 mins to let everything cool off a bit. Adds lots of time to the trip but worked with the added fuel stops.
I was pretty much close to the max GVCW so I took it easy. 3,000 pounds is ok on a V6 though

 

The 4 and 6 cylinder engines are both rated at 3500 # without the tow pac

 

you dont "need" the oil coolers but i would do it.

stop and go traffic really heat up the trans but as long as you get the torque converter to lock up on the highway you will not see much in the way of temp jumps.

since im assuming you will tow regularly after picking up the boat a cooling system seems like a cheap insurance vs new transmission.

also buy something that monitors the trans temps live

 

Ya it's a v6, automatic with no tow package but does have after market trailer hitch.

 

I added e rated tires for better towing as well.

 

You're fine. I towed my FIL's boat with my RC, base, 4 cyl rig. It was close to 3000#. No issues

 

Anyone else towing distance without tow package? ...

I pulled 2700 pounds from Los Angeles to Indiana with a 1999 4-cylinder Tacoma without a tow package or transmission cooler in August of 2006. I put another 30,000 miles on the truck before I totaled it in 2009. No problems. I kept them speedometer at about 60.
