I installed the TRD intake (yes, not worth the money) and kept the paper filter in it. I do have the TRD filter sitting in the garage waiting for me to get slightly ambitious to list it for sale

I looked at various aspects of the basic intake like ours has and the TRD model. I really couldn't see any differences. So kind of what I thought. Thanks for that. Guess I'll stick with my Plane Jane intake for now. ;)

Open to hearing other input if I've missed something though.

    Yeah.
As someone else stated, mostly eye candy. I have the TRD intake, and there are 4 main differences from stock:

    1. It comes with a K&N style reusable air filter
    2. The pipe from the air box to the throttle body is straight (note that the stock one has a bend in it)
    3. The TRD one has a smaller resonator (that box thing coming off the pipe between the air box and throttle body)
    4. The horn that goes through the fender well and supplies that air box is maybe slightly larger

Again, these differences likely have a negligible effect on performance -- the computer is still going to control how much air goes in. Maybe a slight difference in responsiveness? Slightly different sound. Looks cool.

I use the TRD filter when in town. I swap to a paper filter when going offroad so I don't gunk up the oiled filter and have to clean it as often. Right now I have the paper filter in still because I forgot to swap it out.

I also have the TRD billet oil cap. Now, that is a mod that adds at least 10HP.

You can easily get another 10HP by adding a bunch of Go Fast stickers to your Tacoma. :)

The TRD system has less resonators, a straight shot to the engine, and a larger volume of air above the filter. It was explained
somewhere in the forum. Even the TRD system can be improved upon a little.

Had the AFE dry in my 03 Tundra and only ever smacked it on the tire once a year to clean it. Just bought another one (and the spray cleaner this time) for my current squeeze.

Performance? How? All a CAI is doing is its inviting dirt into your engine-easily.
