Once again another example of how FN is the best wheel company and number one for customer service. Toyota could make a contract with you guys and the off road and pro model come factory with FN wheels.

Hey all! Changed direction today… though I have 6 new OEM Grey bead lock 16” wheels and upon looking at tire sizes, mostly limited to width, I decided to call @JdMeF9SiR2 - FN Wheels. I spoke with Dustin, and talked about the direction of my FJ build and he was very helpful. I’m in no way sponsored or affiliated with FN wheels, paid full price (Overland Spec B wheels are currently marked down) and placed an order for 6. Now I have the ability to upgrade brakes, have a better tire choice, and still look OEM’ish. Looking forward to getting them soon.

    edit: FN Overlanders are 17” x 8.5” rather than 16” x 7.5 (TRD Beadlocks)

What tire size are you planning to run? I really like the Overlanders but not having the removable rock ring kinda ruins it for me. That's the #1 selling point of TRD wheels IMO. I too had started shopping for 17" wheels but couldn't find anything I liked and they were all too wide (I wanted narrow - 6.5-7" would be stellar).

Interesting, I had assumed there would be plenty of good 35" options for a 16. But I haven't looked at those sizes. The Toyo 34x10.5R17 was as big as I was looking. But with their price and lack of any narrow 17" wheels it just didn't seem like the right move.

Thank you Andy. I really appreciate your business, and I hope you enjoy your new wheels. I think the 17" wheel diameter will open up a lot more tire options for you.

Hi @clenkeit. I believe we discussed the pros and cons of the removable ring previously, but I'd like to reiterate the cost and availability of the removable ring for the 16" OE wheels. If you were to replace the ring more than twice you could purchase a whole new wheel from us. That's assuming that the bolts that attach the ring haven't seized up onto the 16" OEM wheel, which essentially renders the ring fixed anyway. It also assumes that replacement rings are readily available from Toyota. That's a pretty big assumption considering that Toyota hasn't supplied caps for the 16" FJ SE / Tacoma Baja faux beadlock style wheels for months now. I am not certain what the current availability is for just the ring, but I know that the center cap backorder from Toyota is so severe that we've hundreds of our caps to customers who own the 16" wheels but couldn't get caps for their wheels from Toyota.

To be clear - I like the idea of the removable ring too, but a removable ring is not a perfect solution and it does have some known drawbacks. We took all of this into consideration when designing our Overlander wheels, and we decided that a removable beauty ring wasn't worth the extra cost (which would result in a higher priced wheel) and the extra hassle / maintenance that would be required from our customers to keep the bolts from seizing around the ring.

More so, however, 17x8.5" FN Wheels Overlander Spec A or Spec B wheels were created to fill the void for a 17" wheel option in order to open up more tire choices and to provide better brake clearance.

The 16" Toyota FJ SE / Tacoma Baja beadlock style wheels are a great choice for someone who wants to install 265/70R16 or 265/75R16 tires (or less common sizes like 255/80R16 or 255/85R16) and have an OEM+ fit (a little wider and a little lower offset than most OEM wheels). I definitely recommend the 16" OEM TRD wheels for this purpose, and frequently when customers call me asking about Overlanders for a completely stock truck with stock tires I suggest that they consider ordering the 16" wheels from their Toyota dealer.

With that said, 16" tires are becoming increasingly limited, and the majority of 285/75R16 tires are load range E (10 ply). Load range E tires are heavier and stiffer than what most 4Runner, FJ Cruiser and Tacoma owners require or desire.

315/75R16 (35") tires are very limited. 315/75R16 tires also require a minimum rim width of 8". The OE 16" beadlock style wheels are 7.5" wide, so they shouldn't be used with 315/75R16 tires.

34" diameter tires basically don't exist anymore in 16, so 34's aren't really a choice at all if you go with the OEM 16" wheels.

The 17" FN Wheels Overlander wheels are a great choice for someone looking for a 17" wheel diameter in order to get access to more tire options, particularly someone who owns a lifted/leveled Tacoma.

The Overlander wheels are the only option for someone looking for this wheel design and who requires a larger rim diameter for larger brake clearance. This includes all 4th Gen 4Runner Sport/Limited models, all 5th Gen 4Runners, all Lexus GX460/470's and FJ's, Tacomas, and 1st Gen Tundras with big brake kits.

To elaborate on the increased tire choices in 17" for a Tacoma (this also applies to most other Toyota trucks/SUVs) :

    • 17" diameter wheels (compared to 16" diameter wheels) give you the option to go with 285/70R17 tires in multiple load ratings from virtually every tire manufacturer (not just load range E / 10-ply tires like the 16" equivalent).
    • 295/70R17 is an option for looking for a true 33" tire diameter (very few tires exist in 295/75R16).
    • With a 17" wheel you have a lot of choices for 34" tire diameters such as 34x10.50R17, 285/75R17 and 305/70R17. These choices don't exist for 16" wheels.
    • You'll also have a lot more tires to choose from with a 17" wheel if you're looking to go up to a 35" tire diameter.
    • Lastly, you can still install OE tire sizes such as 265/65R17 and 265/70R17, and there are more tires to choose from in these sizes compared to the equivalent 16" tire sizes.
Possibly the only drawback to the Overlander would be for customers who want to install extremely narrow tires, since the Overlaner is 8.5" wide. However, all of the popular 255/75R17 and 255/80R17 tires are approved for use with 8.5" rim widths, so this really isn't an issue considering that most Tacoma owners aren't going to install tires that are narrower than 255mm.

I'll try not to hijack this thread with any more long posts, but I just wanted to clarify all of this for anyone who is considering our wheels as an alternative to the 16" TRD wheels.

Yeah, we already discussed a bunch of that. I totally get where you're coming from and love that you're making this style of wheel, but it just wasn't right for me (unfortunately). All those "issues" you mentioned with the OEM wheel don't concern me at all so they aren't actually detractors for me. The only flaw I see with the OEM wheel is that they didn't make a 17" version and that they're not 7" instead of 7.5".

And I was speaking less about replaceability of the rings and more about ability to remove and refinish. The OEM rings are easily removed and easily refinished which would be much harder to do when the ring isn't removable. They can be refinished many, many times unless you put seriously huge gashes in them. Not sure about current availability but I see them pop up used fairly often and a set of 4 will run about the same as one from the dealer. I also really like how much larger the OEM rings are. Not sure if they're thicker too but the wider ring is better looking, IMO.

I get why you did the design the way you did. You solved some frustrations some people have and I'm sure they're more practical from a manufacture and sales standpoint. In all honesty, if you had a 7-7.5" version I would have bought a set a year ago as they would have ticked enough boxes for me to make the jump to 17's. But, my indecision rewarded me when Falken released an AT tire in 255/85R16. They're heavier than I would like but I compromised on that since they allowed me to keep my current wheels and there was no aftermarket 17" available with the specs I wanted. Had I been able to get some 17x7 -10 Overlander Type B's I would have compromised on the rings and made the switch to 17's instead.

I realize I'm likely the oddball here who's needs just happen to not really align with the marketplace.

All very valid points! I'm glad you were able to find a tire to suit your needs. If you like the 16" TRD beadlock style wheels I wouldn't let the 7.5" rim width stop you from installing a set. A 16x7.5" rim will work just fine with 255/85R16 tires.

Yup, already mounted 2 sets. The Geolandar G003's really would have been better suited on a 6.5-7" wheel but fit fine. And the AT4W's fit better for sure. They'd still probably prefer a 7" wheel but the 7.5" is fine. Others even run these on 8" wheels, which wouldn't be my preference but seems to be OK. Had I moved to a 17" I pretty much would have been stuck with an 8" because no one makes any 17x7 or 17x7.5

Still enjoying my OE TRD "Beadlocks"

I'm in the process of debating if I want to restore my 1st gen. It needs a new engine and if I go down that route, I'm planning to put these on there and buying SCS F5 for the turd!

Yup, I'm aware of those, was looking for some for the longest time as they seemed like one of the better options out there. Although they're similar to the Tacoma version of faux beadlocks I feel like the Rock Warriors really just aren't a very good looking wheel. I mean, they're OK, but to me the Tacoma faux beadlocks are a BEAUTIFUL wheel. Best part about the Rock Warrior's, IMO, is that they're forged.

Yeah, the 5 lug (tundra) are more plentiful than the 6 lug. Out of production for some time now.

Edit: that link shows them for sale, prior to reproduction of the beadlocks, many sites still showed for sale, but in fact weren’t. Interesting.
