I'm really riding the fence here with this. I'm not completely convinced I should go with a TRD CAI vs. an aFE CAI. I plan on buying one or the other at some point.

Advantages of TRD CAI over an aFE CAI?

It's the only street legal Tacoma CAI. Not sure the AFE will pass smog.

Well AFE used to make the TRD CAI. If your looking at the older version its almost exactly the same. The newer version is an updated slightly more efficient design and has updated looks to coincide with toyotas TX series on the fj, tacoma, and tundra.

As far as function in my opinion they are almost the same. BUT there are a few things that I decided to steer clear of when I purchased mine. Here is how it broke down for me.

TRD Parts do not void warranty, offers the same performance, and offers the same protection as many other brands. Also I wanted something that was built to work with other TRD parts I was looking at adding so I would have little issues.

Other models offer "more" performance but less protection and if a dealership chooses they can not approve warranty items due to aftermarket parts. Not saying they would but you know how they are sometimes.

Now I have said this a few times but I dont believe that the CAI improved my horsepower in a way that was "amazing". I purchased it because I wanted cleaner air going to my motor, more efficient air intake, increased airflow to support better combustion and gas mileage, and I liked the sound. For me up here at altitude I have seen a gas mileage increase and enjoy the sound. When I am on the gas you can tell and when I am off its nice and silent. The filter addition was nice as well saving me from having to have my filter serviced or changed. All in all I am happy.

I have recently added a snorkel to accommodate my tacoma's off road requirements and am working on using my CAI in conjunction with the snorkel. If for any reason it doesn't work I will sell, but not because I am not a satisfied customer but rather because the snorkel is a "have to" and the CAI is a "nice to have" item. If it were not for all the mudding, deep snow, and deep rivers we deal with on a daily basis I would not think twice about changing. I hope I can find a way to make it work up to my standards.

I know this is long but I hope to have answered any questions.

This for me will probably do it. Living in CA it's a PITA to pass smog if you have anything done to your vehicle.

I'll PM you. I'm in definitely.

Steer legal in CA as well? I recall the first version was not.

They are both 50 state legal. I dont get why you would think the first version was not? What was the reason you were given? This does nothing to mess up emissions, noise level, or anything that would cause you to be illegal unless you had them hooked up in a way that was different?

    Sierra,

Thanks for going through the trouble to set up a GB on these TRD CAI's and have people crap all over it because they don't agree with the price or think they can find a better product elsewhere.

My question is - I see everyone that is purchasing or interested in purchasing are 2nd gen tacos. Are you able to get these for the 1st gen 3.4 engines? If so, what would be the price then?

    Thanks bud.

I guess I should have asked if it was carb/street legal in CA; looks like the second version is.

raskal311 is correct. The first version was not street legal since it didn't have a secondary/carbon filter. The new version does.

    [PTR05-35061] Old Version
TRD Cold Air Intakes gives the engine what it needs for improved power - colder, denser air. A pre-oiled reusable high flow, low resrtriction filter is included. This part is sold with no warranty and installation of this part may adversely affect the warranty coverage of the vehicle. The part is not emissions or CARB approved and is for off-highway use only.
