I have a 07 with the 4.0 and was looking into a TRD cold air and after reading i have realized the 1st version was less restricting and made more power the 2nd version possibly had some issue with running lean? i would like to buy the 1st version so my questions are:

Does anyone know where i could buy the 1st version of the TRD cai ?

And if not, where is the best place to buy a TRD cold air? i see them for $400 on ebay but i read about people paying far less. where should i be shopping for this?

The first gen cai is the better of the two, but they are difficult to come across.

The AFE stage II si is the exact same as the gen 1 trd, just with AFE markings on it. That's what I'm running and I love it. Check it out

If i end up running something like the AFE that is not smog legal in CA, will it make my truck run any different or is it just something that smog place wont allow you to have on your car? i have no problem at all with keeping my stock intake to pass my smog checks, but just want to make sure its not going to mess with my mass air flow sensor or whatever that thing is.

any input on the k & n ? its cheaper and the chrome pipe looks pretty clean.

    Too few to list.
AFE made the TRD's though from what I can tell, the AFE tube has a constant pipe diameter while the TRD one is bigger on one end and tapers down.

To answer your earlier smog question... It won't change the numbers to cause it to fail smog, The problem they'll have is that it's a aftermarket not CARB exempt part.

So it'll fail the visual but pass everything else, But I'm not sure if TRD will fail the visual since it's a "TOYOTA" part (i know AFE makes it but it's sold under Toyota) and everything is properly connected. CARB legal parts have stickers like this

I'm sure someone who makes decals/stickers can actually make a fake carb sticker. They won't run the part numbers when inspecting the engine bay (although it won't be too hard to find part numbers for the intakes/headers if they do google it).

My brother has a fake "Steeda" carb sticker for his Intake on his Mustank and hasn't had problems with it failing smog... But my cousin is our smog tech and probably overlooks the aftermarket visuals. (I haven't had to smog my truck ever since I brought her home)

I was going to bring up the carb decal. Not sure what I did with my decal.
