Looking to get a new TRD Desert Intake for my 2017 Pro. Looking to hear from anyone who has gotten one. I figure if you can order a 2019 Tacoma with this option then it should be offered for sale as a part. Got a message into my local dealer but haven’t heard back from them yet.

I do a lot of trail driving in central and eastern Oregon and take a few trips to Moab and other dusty places every year and figure this might help me from changing my air filter as often as I do. And yes, I know this isn’t a “snorkel” and won’t help in crossing any deep waterways. I’ve never have needed to cross anything more than a foot or so deep and I don’t plan on starting now. Nor would I want to subject my Tacoma to anything very deep. Like the idea of this TRD intake and would love to hear from anyone who has purchased and installed one. Price and what it took to get it installed would be great info.

    Thanks!

It’s the worst looking and (probably) the most expensive.

    Solid pass.

I know it’s not the greatest looking but I’m all about function and could care less what it looks like. I do like ARB products and my locker and compressor hasn’t given me any problems so I most likely will get a Safari snorkel if I don’t get the TRD one. And who buys a Tacoma for the looks? The exterior doesn’t look too bad but the interior of my over $40,000 Pro is about as generic and basic as a truck can get especially in this price range. I’ve got over 50K invested in it already and just hope the new Scrambler Rubicon or Ranger Raptor doesn’t make me regret spending all this dough on my Tacoma. But got to love the resale value on these things if nothing else.

    Thanks for all the input!

Seeing that the current JL's frame welds are failing (recent recall), I wouldnt put much confidence in the Scrambler and Ford said no go on the Ranger Raptor in the states yet, so I wouldn't fret. But ya I'd with ARB, looks better than the TRD option, though I'm sure the TRD one would be less of a warranty claim headache should something happen.

For what it’s worth, if function is truly your goal I would say the Toyota TRD DAI will work better. It’s simply further up out of the dust.

I am guessing (only guessing) that Toyota actually did the research and put the intake in a location where is can truly draw in the cleanest air possible. The ARB was likely engineered to be, first and foremost, below the roofline. Toyota took a real risk having the intake up where it might interfere with roof racks etc, so they must have reasons.

It would be great if someone did a comparison test. My guess is the ARB is sucking in more of the dust coming off the truck in front of you that the TRD version.

Yes, it would be great to see a comparison test between those two. There is a YouTube video of the Desert TRD intake being tested against the standard intake on a Pro 4Runner and Tundra and the difference in the dust on the filter in the short time they did it was quite surprising.

And what is a TRD DAI?

The Raptor has already been confirmed for the states. And I know the issues with owning a Jeep. Yes, there will be issues. Use to own Rubicon and it was my daily driver and that is the reason it is no longer in the family. Put too many miles on it and had too many problems with it. Nothing too serious but lots of little things that luckily was fixed under warranty. I now have a 2wd Tacoma as my daily driver so I don’t put many miles on my Pro and won’t on anything else I end up buying. I don’t think I could ever own a Jeep again or even a Ford if it was my only ride. Tacoma’s or any Toyota is about unbeatable for dependability. No argument there.

And I’m surprised so many are against the TRD intake already. Is it just because of the way it looks? Or is it because of the lame standard TRD intake? I don’t think those do much to add any performance. Put one of those on my Tundra TRD that I had before I bought my Tacoma Pro and that seemed like a waste of money. Did look good though

Issues like frame welds failing? Thats pretty serious, especially on a new $50k Rubicon. And where did you see the Ranger Raptor confirmed for the states, because pretty sure it hasnt been, that's directly from Ford earlier this month.

"Ford currently has “no plans to bring it to the United States” reports Autoblog, which spoke to Hermann Salenbauch, the Ford Performance vehicle line director today. From the story:

Though he didn’t specifically mention it, one of the big issues would probably be the Ranger Raptor’s powertrain, a twin-turbo 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder not offered here. He also noted that the Ranger Raptor was really developed for locations where the F-150 isn’t available or popular, so that all regions could have a Raptor. Here in America, the F-150 is, obviously, really popular and there’s loads of demand for the F-150 Raptor. During today’s GT announcement, Ford executives noted that the F-150 Raptor only stays on dealer lots for an average of 20 days."

Trust me. You will see a Raptor state side in most likely 2020 (not sure if a 2020 or 2021 model year). This info comes from a supplier on the Ranger Raptor and has tested a left hand drive Raptor model here state side. Got to realize they aren’t going to announce something that won’t be here for a couple years when it would only hurt the sales of their bread and butter F Raptor. You would not believe how much money Ford makes on those. But I think I would pass on one of those anyway. Not a big fan of turbos and they don’t have a front locker either. Not a fan of Chevy but got to give them credit for adding a front locker to the ZR2 and the Bison model doesn’t look half bad. But if Toyota brought the HiLux Rugged X state side I think I could live with a turbo diesel.

I never had any kind of frame problems with our Rubicon but that does sound serious. But have you ever wheeled a Rubicon? If you have and that’s what you like to do then a Scrambler I’m sure would be on your short list. Really can’t compare a stock Rubicon (Wrangler or the new Scrambler) to a stock Tacoma. Not even in the same league for wheeling.

Parents own both a new 18 Rubicon JLU and an 18 Raptor, 14 Raptor before that. We are a wheeling, trucking type family. I never said that it wouldnt come eventually, but it's not confirmed as you put it in your earlier post.

Check out my build thread (Beginning of Money Pit)
Get the safari snorkle from arb. That's what I have. I would rather have this one than the trd, due to the fact of the height over the roof that the toyota factory "dai" has, and how the ARB was designed for water as well.

What all work would have to be done to get it off the truck. Here in Canada in order to get a red prpro it must have the darn snorkle I can get a red but really don't want the snorkel.

So what all work would need to be done in order to have it removed

PS we also don't get JBL
