I am trying to gather some information on swapping a 2003 TRD E-Locker axle into my 1999 regular cab. I found one local on Facebook Marketplace that is the same gear ratio and comes complete minus the switch and wiring harness. I know being a non TRD model I will not be able to get the light to illuminate in the dash, however to keep this short: do I just need to run a hot wire and a ground from the axle to the switch and fuse it or what all is required?

Is the factory locker worth the swap or would I be better off just putting an aftermarket locker in

There's certainly debate about that in another recent thread. the TRD e-lockers are good lockers, and I certainly like mine, but they aren't really the bee's knees when it comes to lockers. That title belongs to ARB. Harop makes a really nice e-locker, but damn they're expensive.

With an ARB, you keep your factory axle housing. There's a comparable amount of wiring/switch work for either locker. With the e-locker housing, you won't necessarily have to open up the axle, but it's also a used part, so I would suggest opening it up to really inspect it, anyway.

The ARBs aren't neccessarily "stronger" than the TRDs, but IMO they function better. They engage quicker and more reliably under just about any circumstance. I know it takes some doing to get my e-locker to engage sometimes.

If you get a good deal on a e-locker axle assembly, it's probably worth it, but I'm of the opinion that if you're going to fuss with installing a lock with all the wiring etc.. just spend a few more busk to get a superior locker from the start.

If I hadn't found a good deal on mine I think I would've gone the ARB route. The ARB route also gives me onboard air too.
