I hated the sound mine had at first...it had definitely quieted down after 1000-3000 miles, but I still had a little drone from about 1500-2000 RPM. It also is noticeably louder at cold starts...I didn't notice any slower throttle response either...

Also, I installed an AFE Pro Dry S drop in filter today, and the tone changed a little...for the better. Its a little deeper and not as hollow at the low speeds...the drone appears to be gone.

I've had mine since I drove my truck off the lot. I have about 30,000 miles on it now. I have had no complaints on the sound. It did quiet down a lil over the miles, at least I think so.

Thanks for all the additional comments guys! It's starting to sound more encouraging. Maybe I'll try a drop-in filter too! This was the second day driving into work with it, and it didn't seem to bother me as much. I tried to drive as I normally would with the radio at the volume I normally listen to, and only noticed the exhaust a few times. I think after just putting it on and driving, I was focusing too much on the sound. The sound does vary though...sometimes it's a nice smooth sound and other times it's not. I just wish it were smooth all the time! I'm still hopeful it'll even out over time.

Ok...quick update. Either I'm getting used to the sound or the sound is starting to smooth and mellow out. I only have about 500 miles on it so far. In any case...I definitely think this exhaust is growing on me! Sorry all you guys wanting me to give up and give it to you!...u gonna have to wait just a bit longer!!!:D. I have an AFE Pro Dry S drop-in filter coming...I'll see if that make any difference!

Nice..as much as I'd like to buy that away from u its good to hear you're starring to like it..must likely the drop in filter will make a difference..a deeper tone(not to noticeable) but cleaner n louder up front.

Glad your liking it more. FYI, the drop in isn't gonna change your sound one way or another. If you want more sound, than you would need an after market CAI.

Definitely gotten louder over the past year with mine too. Perhaps I'm just getting accustomed to it. I love it but would definitely sound more awesome with some headers

I felt the same way as you, I added a 18" resonator and it solved the problem, MPG's also seemed to get better. :notsure:

The problem with the exhaust sound on these trucks has more to do with the y pipe than the actual cat back you install. The lengths of the mid pipe are not condusive to a smooth sounding v6 ( like a 94 pickup for example, that truck sounds awesome with a cat back) because of this these trucks have a very ricy sound at anything above 3500 RPM. APR has been the only company so far to address this issue with their Y pipe: http://www.aprpower.com/exhaust y-pipe.html

"On a standard y-pipe, the exhaust pulses (pressure waves) from the driver’s side of the engine are delayed due to the added distance of tubing that cross’s over to the passenger side of the truck. Since the pulses are delayed from the driver’s side of the engine, they reach the collector shortly before the next in line pulse from the passenger side arrives. Instead of having six evenly spaced pulses meeting the collector, you have three double pulses which will provide you with the sound quality of a three cylinder Triumph motorcycle engine. When the two pluses from each side of the motor arrive at the collector at about the same time, they are fighting for the same space and offer little as far as collector scavenging abilities. "

    Very cool stuff

As much as I have believed that in every vehicle I have owned, there is absolutely a difference. There was a hollow sound to mine before the AFE filter that defiantly goes away. Put the OEM filter in, and there it is again.

Mines chopped an dumped over the axle now. The y-pipe has also been custom re-routed with slightly larger diameter pipe.

It sounds fine. A little deeper than stock at low RPMs, still sounds rather aggressive above 3k RPM.

I feel it's quieted some from when I first purchased the truck, but I may have just gotten used to it.

I went from a 6.0 with intake and Gibson headers and exhaust to the Tacoma with the TRD exhaust. I can barely hear the TRD exhaust. I was actually hoping it would be a little louder. There's a little drone around 2,500 - 3,000 rpm, but nothing like what I was used to. I agree. Needs headers and intake to wake it up a little bit more.

Glad to hear the exhaust is growing on you OP. This is my next mod and I was having second thoughts when I read your original post. I already have a garage queen with a performance exhaust and certainly don't want anything too obnoxious for my Taco.

Thanks for all the additional comments! Knowing I'm not alone really helps.

Yea...I'm getting used to the sound. The TRD exhaust is far from being obnoxious. To my ears, it's just the right volume...not too loud...not too soft. But for me, it's more the quality of sound that takes some getting used to. Depending on how much throttle you give her, you can kind of control the sound. I think I'm just learning to manipulate it so I only hear the sounds I like!

TRD exhaust sounds awesome IMO. i don't think cabin noise is that loud in the freeway, and thats what i like. i don't like the drone sound when on long trips in the freeway. it sounds mean and deep when wide open throttled too.
