nice write up. Appreciate you taking the time. Not sure whether I will go this route or not but the info and pics will help in my decision making.
Also, I am a 10+ year member of IH8mud and a bit new to this forum. Not sure why there seems to be a larger amount of immaturity on posts here but I wouldn't sweat it. Do what you want to your rig and don't let some random 18 year olds rain on your parade.

Yeah, TTORA guy here myself (used to be a lot more active). Wasn't nearly this immature over there back in the day. People are really insecure or depressed here it seems like. I like this forum because of the great info but the hate and bickering is quite alarming.

more like trying to inform the next person that Toyota is ripping them off 100% by reselling them the same stock intake with a new filter insert and some red lettering slapped on it.

Yup! All these people with these super non-helpful posts are just proving my point. Really too bad. It's replies like the ones above that really make me wonder why I try to share any information here. I simply wanted to write a review (partially because of some requests) and this is what happens. *sigh*

The video comparing the 2 was great man! Honestly it may have been a selling point for me one day.

Because both the stock and the TRD intake pull air from the fender, they are both considered cold air intakes. You are correct though, the difference between the stock and the TRD is high flow.

Thanks, my man. Go-pros sometime don't do sound in videos justice but it's pretty accurate especially comparing between stock and TRD.

The TRD intake is sealed to only pull air from the fender, the OEM is not.

Good point. The rubber air horn does indeed make a seal and is a snug fit in the fender opening while the stock intake has a 90 degree elbow type fitting that simply slips into the opening. Didn't really think of that while doing the install. Thanks!

If you're referring to the secondary filter in the upper portion of the air box, I believe it does. Similar to stock.

Are there really no independent tw user dynos for this?

I would like to see the dyno results for the combination of both parts as well as many on TW, if a dyno was close to me I would do it.

Maybe if we start a "go fund me" account for some one that has both parts, a dyno close by and is willing to do it. I would contribute a few bucks.

    Need a baseline first.

I did the same on my 16OR last week.
Ditto on results & impression: improved throttle response at low rpm as well as less downshifting on grades. Very happy. Noticed no differences yet on fuel.

Ok, now you have my interest peaked. Removing the charcoal filter appears to have helped with performance gains on a bunch of other Toyota vehicles. Apparently it's a pretty restrictive filter. See here (and this was back in 2009). http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/1...-air-box.html#/topics/306124?page=1&_k=dbcro2

Question, does anyone know what the purpose of the charcoal filter is? Is it only a California requirement? I know aftermarket intakes like the afe intake don't have this charcoal filter. For reference, this is the filter we are speaking about.

I dont think it is about people being insecure or anything like that. I think it is just perspective. I assume this forum attracts a wide range of folks but likely caters to the younger crowd a bit. I also assume that points of view of kids that are 16-25, are working a job that doesnt pay a ton, that may have saved a long time for a $33k Taco and that dont have a ton of real life experiences is different than the folks that are 35+, have great paying jobs, have seen the world in the military (etc...), have owned multiple cars and homes and who have learned over the years how to deal with other people in an adult way...
I assume this happens a bit more in forums that cater to younger groups, etc...
Any how looks like you are getting some good dialog happening and hopefully this post helps others make a call on whether this mod is for them or not.

The charcoal filter is for fumes leaving the intake as far as I know.

On my 1st two 4 cylinder Tacomas, I removed charcoal filter and put in k&n and it is a little more responsive, It did pull a little harder according to my butt dyno.
