Hi Taco World! I just got a 2021 tacoma off road army green. Great time to buy a new car/tacoma right?! Have had a 2000 4runner Limited and just sold it and bought the dream car.

SO i also got it with the dealer installed factory TRD lift kit. It was an interesting package and i went for it but was unsure what was to happen with the fog lights since in the parts included it had fog light delete bezels.

After 8 hours at the dealership I got the truck back with no fog lights and neither the mechanic nor the service desk could figure out why the instructions had the mechanic take it out since it was their first time doing it. We figured it was because some states (NOT CA where I am) do not allow the height of the vehicle with these type of non directed fog lights. However, I convinced them to put the fogs back in and signed a waiver that I wont sue them in the event that someone sues me or I get pulled over for having headlights on a lift in one of those random states.

BUT when the mechanic tried to reconnect the lights he said he cant get them to work even though he triple checked all the wiring. The service manager gave the idea that maybe the car's computer is registering the lift and cancelling the fog lights. But then he also gave me a wink that I may be able to fix it... All of this to say I cant figure out how to fix it.

I have double checked all the wiring and it seems fine. I am not the best with electrical problems but it looks correctly connected.

I have come up with three possible solutions:

    1. Its incorrectly wired or theres a connection missing.

    2. The computer in the car is not allowing the fog lights to be turned on. Is this even possible?

    3. If i bought SAE compliant fog lights, is there a chance they would magically turn on? (this would mean the computer in a sense OKAYs the fog lights at that ride height)

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

1 is the answer. 2 and 3 are not. The dealer you went to sounds inept. Make them fix your shit.

    *edit*

They may not be willing to reconnect it due to some type of liability? Have you reinstalled your fog lights and turned them on?

I am planning on going back. I am in the Bay Area too and this was at the Walnut Creek Toyota. The whole install took eight hours and then after they took it back to fix the fog lights it was another hour and I needed to get home at that point.

The wiring all seems fine. Hopefully the mechanic didnt mess anything up in there.

My biggest worry was somehow they sabotaged the lights because they were scared of liability. Not actually sabotaged but didnt finish the job correctly for fear of liability. They installed the fog lights themselves and "couldn't get them to work."

    Have you checked the fuse.
Also, make sure the fog lights are turned on. That stalk has some weird settings for lights.
    Headlights, drl, fog...

I did look at the fuse box although if the fuse was reversed I suppose that could do something too? My fuse tester is MIA but I guess I can just look at a picture online.

And yes the fog lights are on because the dashboard is lit up with the fog light symbol. Which makes this even more confusing.

Highly doubtful that a tech or service department would take it upon themselves to ‘sabotage’ a working element of your vehicle. Also there is no computer that can tell the truck is higher. You will find they disconnected something in error thinking it was to stay off permanently. They will have to figure it out and you will get your lights back on.

Also , the fuses work either orientation they get put in , they cant tell if connected forwards or backwards.

Jim probably cut the wire but didn’t tell Bob.. get your meter out and check that you have continuity from the fuse box to the lights.

Bring it to the dealer and make them fix it and not take no for an answer. After they fix it never set foot in a dealer again.

Also for future reference, you live in the Bay Area. You have plenty of competent installers with way better quality and better rates than those clowns at the dealer. Use them instead and save yourself the headache.

example. Milogen Fabrications in Milpitas or Mark in Fremont. Been to both; both do amazing work.

I just did some more digging and found this which was hidden from view originally. Wiring noob but it looks like a connector missing the other end and the tape near it has definitely been messed with. I also dont see any other connector nearby or really anywhere that could be plugged into it.

Does anyone know what this normally is connected to or what its for? right in front of the battery.

    In B4 missing bulbs.

Otherwise go back and make them fix it.. or explain how to fix it yourself. I’d be livid at anyone for not explaining the entire process. Maybe give you a call before actually removing fog lights and whatnot to explain the procedure. Make them fix this.

Go to pg 26-27 of the install sheet. Reason for removing the fog lights in the affected states is clearly stated. Install sheet says to remove the fog light fuse.

Make sure the fuse is installed. Check continuity across it with an ohmmeter.
Make sure the fog relay is installed and clicks when you turn on the fog switch (in case the mechanic dicked with it contrary to the install sheet).
Make sure the bulbs aren't burnt out (in case the mechanic hamfisted them during original removal).

Good suggestions. Will look into it more tomorrow morning.

And the explanation in the instructions is clear and is what the mechanic gave me but it still is a little odd considering I am in California, one of the states not listed.

Tape yes...janky, no. Could be someone tugged at it. A little more tape gets it back to the main harness.
