Just don’t run the intercooler reservoir dry, have a good fuel pump, use good gas and be vigilant about it acting different. All things that happened to me. Stealership said all was well. I’ve had no engine codes pop up. It does misfire every other time I start it (based on my scanner). I ran a compression test and leak down. Had a local shop check my test (cuz I’m a little ocd about checking crap), they confirmed it.

A friend of mine is a former master tech at Toyota. He wasn’t too surprised about all this and thought I might be better off spending a “little” more rebuilding it with better internals (forged pistons/new sleeves/crank, etc). He also said he liked the “gutless” 3.4L on the 1st gen better, lol.

Edit: not trying to knock down the idea of getting a used engine. This is just a fun project. Could probably buy 3 used engines for price of this project. No the most economícal way to go.

 

1st gens are great. but our engines are better. i changed my s/c pump to the mercedes high flow. i have a pile of gauges with constant data. (yes, i have ocd too) i do my best for what i know. but im plotting for a build yet hoping everyone gets the most out of their rig.

 

still on the fence about 69 rpm and 2.3 or stock length rpm and pulley wrap with 2.3. 1st boost wold problems.feedback welcomed.

 

So uh...brighter LEDs for my meth, anyone know of any? This thing is hard to see even at night. It’s brighter in this picture than it really is.

 

You have to have mega OCD and be willing to do DIY work as well as be a bit of a car hypochondriac in order to make sure that these things stays running top notch all the time to prevent the issues that you had as well @DocME had. I am a freak when it comes to my running condition but that is also why all of my engines have lasted me time. It's too bad it happened to you guys, but at least we will learn through your mistakes.

 

are you talking about taking it apart and replacing led's??

 

found a core 4.0 on offer up in chandler az. asking price is 3$, runs.

Just that single led down by the ECT. It’s dimmer than a unlit candle.

 

for the right price if youre doing a full rebuild it would work. it is kinda tough to judge from the photos.
