Same here. Since opening up the exhaust, I'm down from 10 to 7 lbs. Seems to run much better and just feels happier.

Damn! I can’t believe boost went down that far based on the kelford cams. Did you open the exhaust up headers back?

When I swapped my stock ypipe out for a custom APR style ypipe my boost went down 1 psi. I already had headers.

It wasn't just the Kelford cam that did all that, it was the increase of displacement as well which upped him from a 4.0 to a 4.5L 1GR. 6 psi makes sense. You increase displacement and change the cam on top of it which usually increases duration of intake and exhaust valves being open, and you just increased the overall airflow dynamics of the engine radically, without question the boost would go down with the same pulley you were using.

I hit 12.6 PSI at peak with my 2.3 pulley. I'm thinking with a 2.3 he may hit at most 9-10 psi with all those fancy internal mods he did to his engine.

This. I'm hoping for 10psi with the 2.3. Probably 8 peak now but I can't rev it up enough yet to confirm

Whats everyone's thoughts on long term longevity with stock internals and a 2.3" pulley? I have read that the ring lands start failing around 11psi, so im wondering if a 2.5 would be the sweet spot for extra zip without sacrificing reliability.

Awesome!! Curious what kind of power this 4.5 liter makes on a TRD SC?

Anyway, this is 12.6 PSI on a stock exhaust, ypipe, and manifolds though right. I bet you would drop about 2 psi alone having an fully open exhaust headers back!

So who did the engine work? Is it 4.4 or 4.5 liter @mightytacoman

What is your break in? I'm thinking 1000-1500 miles is about safe before your oil change no?

Well, I got about 2 years on mine, roughly 30K or more. 113K total miles.. if there were going to be any issues I would had seen them by now.

Yeah stock manifolds and 2.5 piping from the Ys from the cats on rearward. I would love headers but you know how California is. :(

Boost is relative so I don’t think it’s directly linked. The 2.3 pulley, supporting mods, and stock internals at sea level and cold temps is around 360/380 rwhp. I’m still sticking with the xrunners from the past and think anything under 400 rwhp is okay.

400 rwhp is my goal on stock internals. I need to find a 1GR to build in the mean time.

I’ve never seen a legitimate dyno TRD SC over 380 rwhp. Except one and it had a nitrous setup that bumped him up to 415 I think. And there were a few e85 runs with the extreme APRx1 tunes that prolly hit over 370.

Exciting times with the kelford cams though. Looking forward to some numbers especially the 4.5 liters

380 would be good enough. I don’t see meth or nitro in my future.

A 4.5 liter with a 1.4L MP90 blower would be the relative equivalent of a 5.9L engine. Of course the power output given all of our mods would put out A TON more power and torque than engines of those relative size are capable of outputting. (At least, based on current outputs, gives me reason to believe so)

Agreed. If I am hitting 370-380, I'm pretty happy with that output.

    It's 470cc larger than factory. If that's a 4.4 or 4.5 is up for some debate I guess. (~4430cc)
Lower half assembled and block machined by R&L Engines out of Dover NH. The rest assembled by myself.
Break in so far is break in oil till warmed up. Oil/filter changed. Break in oil till 300 miles with oil/ oil filter changed. Vr1 racing oil just added.
Darton says not to go over 4000rpm under 500 miles. Not over 6000rpm to to 1000 miles. No synthetic under 5000 miles

I personally think for those people who see ring lands fail, they are not failing “because of boost”. Boost doesn’t blow engines. Knock or improper maintenance does. Change your oil often, use good oil, do things to control your knock, and you’ll have good reliability.

Yep, I've been saying something similar to that for years now. Power does not kill engines, poor tunes and lack of maintenance does.

Sometimes piss poor luck does as well.
