If your coolant is full in the system and functioning properly, you will see smoke through a head gasket, broken head, warped head, pitted passageway....whatever. The milky oil will present itself when changing the oil in the pan. Sometimes it may be faint and checking your exhaust pipe should be done at all positive and negative yaw and pitch (if the leak is at the rear of the cylinder, as an example, you will see the excessive white smoke when sitting at a stop when the nose is uphill). The coolant doesn't get pushed into the overflow from the engine combustion unless there is a severe leak of which you would notice in plain loss of power since you drive in such a spirited manner and this isn't just a clapped out mid 80s four banger. Finally, if you were low on coolant for any variety of reason (e.g. slow leak in radiator) then you could be overtaxing the capacity of fluid that currently sits in your single core OEM setup (less than 2 gals, IIRC).

These opinions are not backed by an ASE certification, just through experiences in an effort to help.

The part that concerns me is that he mentions the fact that there is an oily sludge in the reservoir. Sludge at any point in the reservoir is always a cause of concern.

The combustive gasses displace the coolant around the block. The coolant goes into the overflow.

Considering that you have a 2005 model, the probability is high for it to be a blown head gasket.

If so, just depends on what all you want to do, and how far that you want to tear it down. Give us some ideas.

Simplest is all OEM replacement parts.

i agree but each cylinder cycles between pressurized and vacuum so quickly that you end up consuming coolant in the combustion cycle and out the exhaust as smoke/vapor. You then overheat the fluid that remains because it isn’t cycling properly to the heat exchanger and therefore exceeds its boiling point and expands the system from a liquid to a gas escaping through the pressurized cap into the overflow. I am sure this isn’t absolute and certainly a combination. I do agree with the 05 being suspect. The sludge is concerning and could be an oil vapor mix that is too heavy to go back into the system and remains in the overflow tank. A cylinder pressure test is simple and easy and the most logical first step. Even if someone else does it, getting your SC out of the way of Bank 2 is the hardest part.

It can be done with SC in place just like the spark plug change can be done with sc in place. It is a pretty tedious process though.

Getting some head work done today. Very slow at work. Hopefully get this head done and the back together and on next week. @Torspd quick question. The Kelford cams come with the spacers for under the valve springs. Do I leave the factory shim/spacer that’s under the spring? Or remove it

I don't have those on mine. Are you referring to between the valve stem and bucket shim?

My heads may have them. I never disassembled them, after the builder worked with them.

My bumper is a SOS Offroad stealth bumper. To clear the winch all I had to do was flip those clamps 180 degrees so the pump is above the bolts vs below them. Depending on what bumper and winch you have, it might require moving the more than I had to.

FWIW, I inspected my morimoto 160 T-stat and it was installed upside down. Perhaps the orientation in the 4Runner is such that it puts the jiggle in the appropriate position or mine was just off. I used a 1 1/4” socket to push and turn it out then orient properly and reinstall.
