TRD/ Magnuson 4.0 Supercharger Tips, Tricks, and Mods

Thanks a bunch! Yeah if you have a video around somewhere I'd love to see it. I'm not gonna lie I'm a little intimidated to take apart the steering wheel and air bag stuff. I'd really like to get a good idea of what i'm in for before i tear it apart since it isnt my truck..

Whats better... More filter media or more capacity for oil on a FI setup?

 

Seems like Nate took my measurements and ran with them! I’m happy these quick change hubs are lining up with everyone else. Shows how consistent TRD and magnuson have been with the blower design

 

Definitely advantageous to have more oil, but i do think the drain back valve is important since the filter is inverted. I change the oil and filter every 3k so the amount of media is probably not gonna matter too much in the grand scheme of things, I'm more concerned about the filter having to reprime every time you crank it up

 

I have a brand new OEM clockspring for the steering wheel controls. I had airbag issues, but ended up being the wire going to the front crash sensors got broken somehow. Never needed to take the clockspring out of the box, but bought it because I assumed I would need to replace it. let me know if interested, I'll get a pic/part number, and look up how much I paid so I can have some idea of the amount of money I will loose...

4th gear pull this morning meth is working and feels great

 

Nice! Glad your engine is running smooth. The 3.73 ratio is so different. My 3rd gear pull at 3k is closer to 65-95.

What nozzle size are you running?

 

this is how I felt this morning for some reason. I lost so much giddy up when I went up in tire size. I can’t wait for headers to get here but gears have to come next.

Would this make you want to change filters? I change my oil ever 5k and live in Utah. I visit Montana often in the winter, so my truck sees a wide range of temps. -20 in the winter up to 105 in the summer, I tend to drive hard at times. I'm okay spend a little more on oil and filters if it gives me pice of mind.

I'm thinking the above filter with Amsoil 5w-30, or Pennzoil ultra Platinum 5w-30.
What oil do you use?

 

It very well might.. I live in Texas and it's pretty hot here so Ive been running 10w40 M1 full synthetic. Most motor oils these days are great compared to what they used to be, so I don't think you can go wrong picking a brand. It's changing it out regularly that's the most important thing imo

I'm intrigued by this filter, about which I was previously unaware. Not sure I'll switch, because they're 3-4 times the ($4-$5) cost of the

$55 Toyota Genuine Parts 90915-YZZD3 Oil Filter 1 Case (QTY 10)

Toyota 90915-YZZD3 filters I currently use, but they appear to be another good choice.

Like @BassAckwards, I believe regular oil changes are the key, so I don't think you'll go wrong with either of those oil choices. The climate here is similar to yours and, FWIW, I switched to Amsoil Signature Series 0W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil several years ago. I did so because most engine wear is at startup, and 0W- oils' improved cold flow properties should minimize that.

Looks like I am way overpaying with my filter. I run the TRD filter for like $15 each. But mainly run it just so that I can mover a product on the shelf but also have one on the shelf to show people when they ask. I get lots of asks but not many sales. I stock the TRD replacement for the D3 and the A1 that I use on my Taco and Camry. The A1 replacement is nice to have to show people the media difference since it is a open element. And just switched oil from the Redline 0w40 to the Pennzoil platinum 5w30 and use 5K intervals. Going to try the ultra platinum but undecided on weight still.

 

man. You may not have as much airflow as I do, but you’d win hands down from the weight difference.

 

Xrunners should almost always have a leg up on us 4WD guys lugging extra crap around. That's some pretty decent acceleration.

 

That’s only 6° of timing too
