    gotcha.

so one other thing is that it doesnt make any knocking sound while cranking. just once it fires up. im really hoping its the transmission but dont think its that.

I mean, it could very well be the pilot bearing.. too many what ifs right now until you get a proper oil sample, then compression. If those rule out you could always do a dynamic compression test and that'll tell you if all the cylinders have equal running compression which will then rule out major engine failure. If I remember correctly the t chain tensioner is on the passenger side. You may want to pop the inspection plate off and see where exactly the piston is and if it is leaking majorly to rule it out. Pulling the valve covers and inspecting valve springs may be necessary at some point as well to make sure their integrity is all good as well. Maybe you broke one? The compression test would reveal that and especially the dynamic test would no doubt. If I were you I would do the least invasive inspections first before getting to that point. Keep it as easy as possible until it reaches the point of further inspection.

well i know its not the pilot bearing. these trucks dont have one. i did pull the pass plugs and they were fine, in fact they looked pretty good and they are at almost 30k miles. could see the top of two pistons and didnt see any damage to those to. didnt feel like dealing with the drivers side yet. ill have plenty of time next two weeks to really tear into everything. ill be on leave and family will be out of town for 3 weeks so nothing to really interrupt me.

Very hard to tell with the vid and your description, but it could even be a cracked exhaust manifold...especially if you're saying it's not doing it while cranking

dont see how a cracked header would make a banging sound. this isnt an exhaust tick by any means.

Quick question for torquing down headbolts. For our 4.0l I see you do 27 lb initial torque for head bolts then 180 degree final torque angle. Should I do the full 180 degree at one time or break it up in two steps and do 90 degrees at a time following the bolt tightening sequence?

That is done however the FSM indicates it wants you to do it. I would personally like to do it in two 90* sequences because it helps spread the torque more evenly across the head gasket.

Worth a visual inspection. Better than pulling a motor

Can you differentiate if it's coming from one side? Or actually from the block/head?

Another question guys - are babbitt bearing cups reusable if they are still unscratched and smooth. There is one under the passenger side intake cam and I have a remanufactured head that came without one. Can I use the one from the older head?

Thanks! I just swapped out the dt mid pipes for stock w/cats. It's so much quieter now lol.

Next question, now that I'm running dt lt headers and stock mid cats, do I still need to have the URD Sim plugged into the rear O2's?

To pass emissions you can’t have any CELs. So you either need the urd sim or HPtuners.

In California. Here in Colorado, it depends on the county you reside in and have the vehicle registered.
