TRD/ Magnuson 4.0 Supercharger Tips, Tricks, and Mods

I in no way support the new law but maybe people will think twice about just turning the knob to 11. I’ve been woken up at 3-4 am enough times by some kid with an overly loud exhaust.

 

Well fellas, Scott nailed it. Clogged Catalytic in Bank 1. Checked bank 2 and that was failing as well. Need to get rid of these. And just my luck the URD headers are not available right now...

When I separated the header from the Y pipe, I could see the guts were blown out and clogging that leg. Removed the header to find it completely empty of media. Peeked at the other side and the media was starting to separate. I bet I have less than 20k mi on these. @Chickadee is having similar issues. Looking around other car forums I start to see a pattern.

So I have to take the whole exhaust off, shake it, vacuum it and hope all that junk is out so that it doesn't rattle and clog some more.
I have been on the stage 1 tune the whole time these have been on and I have data logs showing that it was running properly. I am guessing this would happen again with a replacement set unless aFe has made some changes.

In the mean time I could throw my stock manifolds back on; boooo! Or I could gut the other aFe header and just run them both open.
I wonder how the truck will like running with those empty cat sections so close to the motor? I assume it will be louder but will I cause any trouble?

 

Glad Scott figured out the issue! Gutting the front cats wont cause any issues. You have the UCon, so no need for o2 sims, as they're built into the UCon. Truck will likely run better without the cats since it will be able to breath more easily. Expect it to be a bit louder though

 

What's the issue with the URD headers not available?

You should definitely inform AFe. I think I have heard of this from a handful of other members as well.

 

I sent an email with pics last night. I don't think anyone would be satisfied with a $1500 set of headers failing so soon. Not sure how they could make this better besides a refund...

 

I talked to Gadget last week and he said the headers are done but are waiting to be ceramic coated at the vendor and he doesn't have an ETA. The headers have been there since before the holidays.

Truck had been running great up until this point. Now I am getting the mod bug real bad. Wanting to get the 7th inj kit and a 2.5" pulley. But I should probably spend that money on a re-gear and then revisit that idea...

 

My set that I ordered in August/September were in that batch. I kept in constant contact (squeaky wheel) and he was able to get 6 sets to fulfill a couple of orders. He's going to have to find new source for ceramic coating, that has to be killing his sales on these.

 

Setting up his own station to do the spraying, would/could help a lot in that regard. It would take out at least one middle man.

 

You got that right. Plus he could control the quality. I think his equal length headers are some of the best performers out there, hopefully he gets it all straighten out.

We’ve been thinking of the possibly of retiring there in 7-8 years. (Arizona) It at least is one of the front runners....
