I agree, that operating temps once engine is on vary that much to switch oil, but I disagree about sticking with at least 5W oil. 0W oil is formulated to flow like 0 weight in cold conditions, yet offer the protection of a 30 weight when the engine reaches full operating temperature. As such and because most engine wear is at startup, I don't see any downside in switching to 0W oil.

 

You didn't mention 0W oil as an option. I think but I could be mistaken the lighter oil is more viscous and this will mean less of it is sticking to the engine parts and such. In hot temps this means less oil coating the engine parts. In cars with tight tolerances the light oil is used to get into the tight spaces where it would otherwise be restricted. 10W oil the opposite. Sticks to parts but harder to distribute around at startup.

I don't think using different weight oil will kill a motor, but it could reduce longevity over time. And I think the performance specs on oil are pretty similar.

I'm not sure what you're saying, since I did specifically mention 0W oil in both my posts.

Viscosity is measurement of how easily oil pours at a specified temperature. Thin oils have lower viscosity and pour more easily at low temperatures than thicker oils that have a higher viscosity. Thin oils reduce friction in engines, helping them start more easily during cold weather. It's important to note that this doesn't necessarily mean the oil is thinner once it's hot, since that's determined by the second number of the muli-weight specification (e.g., 0W-30).

Ok Maybe not an "upgrade" but just a good replacement since mine are sticking slightly and probably just need replacing.

Actually, I just crawled under again to grab some pics and its not as bad as I originally thought. The C clamp for one of the Y pipe connections is like...one solid rust piece now, but the rest of the actual exhaust piping just has surface rust and some baked mud. I'm guessing that clamp was just sub par metal compared to everything else and salt water didn't go together well.

I might still pull off all the exhaust and sand it all down and get some black exhaust paint on it all just for a little more rust protection.

I will NEVER use 0-20 oil. That stuff is garbage. Synthetic or not. I have seen the long term effects of using it over time in multiple instances. Hard pass.

You’re in CA so you’re probably cleared to use avocado oil

 

That's a criminal offense out here. Especially in the bay. Avocado protection groups will have your head if you use its oil to lubricate the internals of your fossil fuel consuming vehicle. They are less than likely to pursue you if you use potato oil instead.

 

Ain't that the truth. The Avocado is only approved for guac and toast.

Peanut oil is cool to use out here as well.
