I've decided to get the TRD OEM lift kit for my '21 TRD Sport, well, most of it, anyway.

Instead of getting the entire $1,500 "kit"(PT84K-35221), as I already have a "Pro" grille, I plan on piecing together just the suspension parts from ToyotaPartsDeal.com for $680. And instead of having the dealership install it for ~$900, I'm going to have a local tire & suspension shop install it.

    FULL KIT:

    MY ALTERNATIVE:
    upload_2024-6-21_19-10-27.png

After some further forum digging I'm think I am skipping the Toyota 1" Block Spacers and U-Bolts and instead get the "ICON add-a-leaf" kit, as it would only be an additional $50 upgrade. Based on my reading, people say it's worth doing over just throwing on the spacers.

    Couple questions:

    1. Are there any downsides to having a local shop do it over what a dealership would do? Seems not as long as they are reputable.

    2. I just purchased the truck and it's certified/under warranty. Will my warranty be affected in any way by having someone else install it or by adding the ICON leaf spring? Read through the Toyota Certified Used Vehicle Warranty Supplement and it reads as I will be fine as long as it isn't an issue that could be directly traced to ICON leaf or an improper installation of the OEM "add-on" shocks.

    3. I'm reading that there isn't really a need to get the TSS recalibrated after a small lift like this, can anyone confirm this from their own experience? Confirmed to not be needed by multiple people with same lift.

    4. Should I have the shop do an alignment right after installing or let things settle for a few weeks beforehand? Seems like the safe bet is to align after install.

If anyone has any pictures of their Tacoma with a 2" front lift and the 1.5" rear lift, let them babies fly. Curious how the stance looks compared to all the 1" rears I've been looking at from people who used the full kit & spacers.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

    1. I would say you take the same risk having dealer or a local doing it. I would just read some reviews and pick the place you feel most comfortable going to and you will be good. Also if the coilovers come pre assembled the front is a fairly easy install and a way to save some money and learn at the same time. The add a leaf is a little more complicated just because you have to separate the leaf’s but definitely doable. There is a YouTube video for everything.

    3. No need to do that. Also the Trd pro grill moves the sensor down to compensate for the extra couple of inches gained in the front. I have 35’s and a 1.5-2” up front and never had any issues.

    4. You can get an alignment at the same time I wouldn’t worry about waiting a few weeks.

good idea to go with an add a leaf instead of a spacer. Spacer lifts are junk.

I went with headstrong AAL, however I also use my truck so lifted the front only 1" and 1.5" in the back to keep rake and be level when loaded. so far so good.

I did not have to recalibrate anything and have had no issues as of yet, it has been like a month and a half.

I also pieced my "kit" together but used BAM Wholesale to purchase my shocks

Parts on the way, I will let you know, probably next week. We are doing a handful of things in the shop when I go down (suspension, wheels/tires, skid plate, powder coating drums/rotors, etc.) but it should only be a day or two.

Thanks for the input, the shop is owned by a buddy of mine so it should be pretty smooth sailing. Glad to hear I won't need to mess with the TSS or pay for that to be re-calibrated. I'll have him do the alignment while we are there.

    Thanks for the reassurance!

This is exactly what I did on my 2020 Off Road and it turned out great. No calibration done. Definitely have an alignment done once completed.

Did the exact same thing excluding the Add-a-leaf. Installed the kit in my garage by myself. No calibration for the sensors needed. The needle bearing went bad almost immediately and had to do the ECGS clam shell install. Got an alignment after that. Since then 15,000 miles no problems.

I did the 3 leaf aal from headstrong back in 2018. Went along with the 2nd generation pro suspension kits that were on closeout at the time.
I have to say that the aal really stiffened up the rear.
I took out the remote res shocks and put in 5100s to soften it up. Helped a little.

You might consider starting with the Block if you want the factory ride

Will do! Just going with a matte black to match the wheels that are going on.

Nothing wrong with the rear 1" block, unless you plan to tow a lot.

Is it me, or does this look like the front end is lower? Like the oem slant?

Agreed, blocks are just fine especially just a 1 inch one and the trd/billstein 5100 rear shock is longer anyway

Good to know, I have a feeling I'm going to add a rack and RTT at some point so I figured the "add-a-leaf" would also be future proof

It’s supposed to be lower. Has a 2” front lift and 1.25” rear, which still maintains some rake…. Like trucks are supposed to have.
