Like a PLC for a car.

I don't know that I would agree. CAN is a network that links nodes. PLC's are controllers, but they can be hooked to a network. The rough automotive equivalent to a PLC would be things like the engine control unit, the instrument panel control unit (whatever Toyota calls it), and the infotainment head unit. The rough equivalent to CAN in an industrial setting would be fieldbusses.

CAN is 10 year old technology. Manufacturers are moving to LIN-bus now.

Any progress on this anyone?? Ideally keeping the OEM switch but adding a new switch wouldn't be the end of the world.

Yeah, but Tacomas aren't all the same. Third gen is canbus which is our problem.

I read that product page is that it works with 2016 hilux and fortuner which it says also have canbus. I guess one way would be to compare the canbus diagrams between thr hilux amd taco of anyone as access to these...

Its still a guessing game what interlocks are required for the locker to come on; add switch, transfer position, etc.
There's a pretty good list of failsafe conditions for the locker in the service manual, so it's monitoring quite a few things. I think that would be a good place to start.
