Hi guys, sorry I'm new to the tacoma world and I am interested in buying a used 3rd gen TRD Off road. I did look this question up and couldn't really find a previous thread. I was always under the impression that all TRD Off Road trim models came with MTS and crawl control, however I came across a 2017 Off Road that had what appeared to be a sunglasses holder where the MTS and CC is usually located. So I guess my question is: is MTS/CC only available for certain years, or is it like an added package and is not standard? Or something else. A follow up question: if it is a package, what is the cheapest package that it comes in? Thanks guys

My guess is it’s a 2WD Off Road hence no crawl control.

Yay I think this answers my question. A follow up question is this: do all 4WD TRD Off Roads have MTS/CC?

Actually it was auto. I couldn't find the exact car I saw, but this one is similar. https://www.carmax.com/car/22846560 , you can see from the 360 pic that it doesn't have mts/cc

It will only have MTS and CC if it is a 4WD with Automatic transmission.

I will say after 7 years of having both, the MTS is cool but I can't tell you it has ever made much of a difference for me. CC is a neat trick too, but honestly I've never ACTUALLY used it.

These trucks are very hard to get stuck in sand, even on street tires, which is what CC is best at. They really will only get stuck in deep mud and CC will do nothing for you there whatsoever.

Okay that's interesting. I need to do my research and read reviews of ppl with MTS/CC to see if It is even worth paying extra for. Thanks for your input!

Check vin advice above is correct.
There are many SR5 with trd offroad stickers.
    Also 2wd Trd Offroad exist.
Manual trans TRD off road 4x4 are different.
    Thats what I have.

    Always check.
    Does it have 4x4 switch?
    Low 4, high 4, 2wd.
Does it have a diff lock button?
My friend bought a 2wd Trd offroad, salesman told him it was 4x4, advertised as 4x4, it was lifted, trd pro wheels, and shocks.
He only figured it out when he needed 4x4 and it wasn't there.
The sticker said TRD offroad 4x4. It had fender flares in matt black just like mine.

How often do you plan to be on dirt, sand, rocks, mud, etc. ?

How serious are you about off roading?

The most (and maybe only) useful thing about the Off Road is having a rear locker, but even that you could do without...

I’ll be honest I’ve taken my truck off road a fair bit, mostly moderate and easy passes out here in Colorado. I’ve played around with the crawl feature but never found an instance where I actually needed to use it. Same goes for the locker but unlike crawl control, I could see that coming in useful at some point.

    Itz JDM tyte, yo!
I only cared about having the rear locker as I had been in some situations that it would be really helpful in. I never used MTS/CC as my truck doesn't even come with them.

CC really shines on loose descents like Red Cone.

I have never used either and have been off road in the sand and in the snow. Never used my locker either which is needed when rock crawling and you need more torque at slow speed.

First time I turned it on I thought my transmission was filled with loose nuts and bolts.
